10-14-04, 10:45 AM Is there a limit to the number of hit-dice that you can advance a monster? If the advancement entry reads, for example: 5-8 HD (Large), does that mean the monster can never have more than 8 Hit-Dice? If the answer to that is no, does its size change at 9 Hit Dice?

10-14-04, 11:50 AM You can only advance a monster to the HD given in its entry with your everyday monsters. So if the entry reads 5-8HD (Large), you can never give it more than 8HD and its size will not increase beyond large.
If you want to make an abnormally large monster (ie, one above that limit), its better to start from scratch so you can give it appropriate abilities to keep it with a balanced CR.

What about a Druid's animal companion? If the companion animal has reached its advancement limit, is it time to ditch it for a different animal?

No the druids animal companion advancement is different from the monster advancement in the MM. A druids animal companion can exceed the HD limit for other creatures of its type.

Not to mention the fact that animal companions don't increase in size due to their bonus HD (see the FAQ).
