For instance, a fiendish dire rat (1 HD).

What would happen if it advanced to 4 HD? Would the template "grow" along with it? SR 9, DR 5/magic etc.? Or would the template stick to the base creature's statistics (SR 6, no DR etc.)

Also, how does the fiendish template work for, say, a rat swarm? The base creature, the individual rats, are 1/8 HD, but the swarm as a whole has 4 HD.

Thanks!

Normally the template evolves with the creature if it gets better DR or resistance from the template with its new HD then it gets those abilities.

For the swarm I suppose it could go either way but I would count the total HD for the purpose of determining its special abilities.

Way, way back in the olden days...

Template abilities based on HD only used racial HD, not class HD.

Then everyone got confused again later.

Hope that helps.

Not really... ;)

So you are saying there used to be a rule, but now there isn't?

There must be some published beastie that can answer the following riddle:

"If A Half-Fiend 1st-level Human Fighter has SR 11,
Does a Half-Fiend 6th-level Human Fighter have SR 11 or 16?" :P

The template gives you some abilities based on HD. When your HD increases so does those abilities from the template.

Also, how does the fiendish template work for, say, a rat swarm? The base creature, the individual rats, are 1/8 HD, but the swarm as a whole has 4 HD.

You should apply the template to the Swarm (4 HD) and not the individual rats (1/8 HD).

For game purposes a swarm is defined as a single creature

...and HD are HD for determining abilities gained from the Fiendish template so it does not matter if they come from class levels or monster advancement.

Heh, I guess none of you heard the screams of monkeys arguing when people said the Feral template was the best template ever. :D
