I am planning an encounter with some efreet in the near future, and I am looking for some interesting builds involving them. Efreet are CR 8, and I want to add no more than 5 to their CR. There are only two of them. There will be four CR 10 pit traps (60ft drop into lava). The idea is that the efreet will fly just above the floor around the room and attempt to trick the players into falling into the traps.

So I am looking for suggestions for advancing the Efreet to be CR13 creatures.

Also, how do you determine the spot check for noticing the concealed pit traps? Or would the party actually have to search for them? If it is spot, would one check reveal all the traps? That would be a bit lame.

Thanks for the help.

Make them Were-Giant Crocodiles.

And fill the pit with hungry giant crocodiles.

EDIT:

Hmm, lava pit. Make them fire elemental crocodiles.

So I am looking for suggestions for advancing the Efreet to be CR13 creatures.

Well, your stock efretti is CR 8, with 10 Outsider HD. Adding +6 HD gives them +4 CR. (+3 for the HD, with an additional +1 for a size increase) If you put one level of Fighter on them, and use the bonus feat for Improved Bull Rush, that gets you to CR 13 nicely.

The Efretti could use their Change Size and invisiblity SLAs, and then Bull Rush any unsuspecting PCs into the pit traps; with Improved Bull Rush and the advanced HD, their total modifier would be +26.
(and with the extra two feats from advancing by racial HD, you could probably pick up Awesome Blow, giving the efretti another way to knock PCs into the pits)

Alternatively, you could give the Efretti 10 levels in a non-associated class like Cleric or Sorcerer. That pushes their CR up by +5, and lets them have access to dispel magic and improved invisibility and haste.

One more option would be to make them both half-White Dragon efretti; they gain immunity to cold, and more strength for bull rushes and Sunders. That's +2 to the CR, so you could still add three associated class levels like Fighter or Monk, and use the feat gained for an unexpected Metabreath feat from Draconomicon.

Also, how do you determine the spot check for noticing the concealed pit traps? Or would the party actually have to search for them? If it is spot, would one check reveal all the traps?

Your standard 60 ft. deep Pit Trap (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/traps.htm#cr3PitTrap) can only be detected by a Search check. Spot will not help you find a pit trap. And Searching for a pit trap only reveals its presence in a given square, and does not reveal other pit traps.

Thanks Dok. I sometimes forget about the non-associated level thing. I think they will be 10th level Efreet Beguilers. I haven't got to use that class yet, and it goes very well with Efreet. It also fills in some blanks that I needed to fill with the rest of the adventure.

The pit traps should be a real surprise for the party, since they will not really have time to search.
