After reading through the MM a couple of times I still cannot find any set rule on advancing a creatures caster level for their spell-like abilities or spell resistance. I have just been using a rule of thumb, take hit dice, plus or minus current caster level. For example the Leonal has 12 hit dice and a caster level of 10, so a 16 hit dice Leonal would cast as a 14th level caster.

As for spell resistance I take the challenge rating of the creature and subtract it from their spell resistance. For example the Leonal has a 28 spell resistance and a CR of 12, so you get a 16. So when you calculate the new CR you should increase the spell resistance accordingly. If the new CR for an advanced Leonal is 16, the spell resistance should be 32 (16 +16 = 32).

Going according to the rules, unless specifically stated, a creature's Caster Level and SR DON'T increase when you advance the creature. Although, I am of the opinion that you could easily fudge that and increase them, just as you indicated in your post.

I've done it, there's nothing wrong with doing that, and I'd actually encourage people to do it. It does make sense, doesn't it?

I usually find base SR and caster level by subtracting the creature's HD from said values. I then determine current caster lever and SR by adding the creatures HD to this number.

There is a rule saying that basically unless otherwise mentioned the caster level of spell like abilities = HD. This doesn't apply to creatures like the Rakshasa, who cast like an X level caster (These creatures normally advance by character levels so it isn't an issue). I take that as a licence to increase CL when modifying HD.

I believe the rule that SP increases with CR was a houserule that the sage made up for 3.0, and I assume that it isn't balanced or it would have made it into the current version.
