Whats the difference, besides damage reduction and lvl adjustment, between afflicted and natural lycanthropes?

Natural lycanthropes can pass on lycanthropy and afflicteds can't, and naturals can transform at will and never transform on accident; they don't have to make Control Shape checks or change upon taking damage or at the full moon like afflicteds.

Afflicted cannot inherently control their transformation, mainly. As well as the obligatory alignment shift.

Finally, afflicted lycanthropes can't take hybrid form, and naturals can.

That's not true. Finally, a natural lycanthrope (or an afflicted lycanthrope that has become aware of its affliction) can assume a hybrid form that is a mix of its humanoid and animal forms.

The alignment shift isn't really a difference. Natural Lycanthropes are born with that alignment, after all (they're an Always Lawful Good or Always Chaotic Evil or Always Neutral race, like Demons or Angels) and the reason the Afflicted changes is that it changes to match the Natural Lycanthrope who spawned it.

Afflicteds can take Hybrid form only as a *voluntary* choice (meaning they've accepted the curse and the alignment shift). The involuntary transformation is always to Animal form.

Unless they put skill ponts into it.

Other than the DR and the LA the difference is not much. . .

I'm just statting up some wererat dwarves (I'm going to run the old 3.0 free adventure The Alchemist's Eyrie as a sidequest next session) and I have one question: can lycanthropes talk in hybrid form? All I could find in the rules is that they can't cast spells with verbal components. This suggests that they either can't talk at all or just can't talk clearly enough to be able to cast spells. Which is it?

The second, I think. Faerun has a bit more info on lycanthropy.

OK thanks. I'll have a look through my FR stuff.

EDIT: Hmm, all I've found so far is the lycanthrope entry in the 3.0 Monsters of Faerun. That wasn't very helpful, especially considering that lycanthropes were considerably different in 3.0 ... are they mentioned in more "fluffy" detail in another FR book?

Ah here we go ... Races of Faerun has some good fluffy stuff. EDIT: But it still doesn't say whether or not they can talk in hybrid form. Hmm. I guess I'll have to consult the FAQ next.
