Howdy do.

I am putting together an encounter in my Campaign involving half-fiend goblinoids (bred by barghest rulers).

I am having a little difficulty establishing the proper CR and ECL of the main char, and would appreciate any help.

Katungo: male half-fiend bugbear barbarian 2, fighter 2, rogue 1

I know they state when adding classes to a monster you use standard rules for multiclassing; i.e. 3 HD + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8 for determining it's adjusted HD.

I also know that the total ECL adjustments are +5; +1 for being a bugbear and +4 for being a half-fiend.

The trouble I am running into is the rules on half-fiend CR adjustments, as it states if the creatures base HD is 4 or less it gains a +1 CR, base HD of 5-10 gains a +2 CR, etc.

In regards to this, would they be referring to the bugbear's base 3HD or would his base HD be 8 after his class adjustments?

Overall i am trying to figure out this monster's CR and ECL effectively.

So far I calculate it to be CR 10 (assuming his base HD to be 8 instead of 3), and his ECL 13 for gaming purposes.

Am I way off?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Bugbear: 3 HD, CR 2
Barbarian 2: Associated class, +2 CR
Fighter 2: Associated class, +2 CR
Rogue 1: Associated class, +1 CR

The trouble I am running into is the rules on half-fiend CR adjustments... In regards to this, would they be referring to the bugbear's base 3HD or would his base HD be 8 after his class adjustments?

The answer to this is very easy: when applying the half-fiend template, do you use the base 3 HD for spell-like abilities, or the creature's total HD? Will this half-fiend bugbear use have desecrate and darkness as spell-like abilities, or will it also have unholy blight and poison? Since it appears that its SLAs work off of total hit dice, then the CR adjustment shold as well.

Half fiend: +2 CR

Final CR 9. 2 (base creature) + 2 (barbarian levels) + 2 (fighter levels) + 1 (rogue level) + 2 (half-fiend template)

Final ECL would be 12. 5 (class levels) + 3 (racial HD) + 1 (bugbear level-adjustment) + 4 (half-fiend template)

A word of caution, though. The CR is somewhat misleading; with 2 levels in two classes and one level in another class, this monster will be less effective than an identical creature with 5 levels in a single class. His Fortitude saving throw will be huge, but his Will (and to a lesser extent, Reflex) saves will be a huge weakness. And, even with the equipment appropriate to a 12th level NPC, he'll probably still be frail compared to even a 10th level party.
