Always and Usually [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-31-05, 07:38 PM Okay, we are having a bit of a problem when facing monsters or choosing monsters as characters. There's always that alignment judgement. When it says Usually *insert alignment here*, that means that there are few creatures of this race that choose to be a different alignment (If it says Usually NE, then you could play one that could be NG). But when it gets to Always *Insert alignment here*, would that mean that there is NO possible way that there is a chance of a good aligned monster of that race? Or is it just really really rare?

07-31-05, 07:49 PM Monsters of alignments that differ from "always X" are winning-the-lotto rare. And I'm not talking about pick 4 BS, I'm talking about powerball. Actually, winning powerball probably isn't rare enough. Winning powerball with the numbers in exactly the same order as they get drawn in might be coming close.

For "often" and "usually" I believe that you have to have around 1/3 of the monsters of a particular alignment to get "often" and around 2/3 to get "usually." I'd say a "usually LE" creature that is CG is a pretty big departure, though, and is probably about a 1 in 100 or less chance since it is completely opposite. Of course as a PC you're already a heroic exception to the normal hum-drum population so you might as well figure that you can be whatever alignment you want with an "often" or "usually" race.

08-01-05, 09:40 AM A PCs race should not constrain their alignment, though the alignment they choose may alienate them from their fellows. I see no problem with a LG drow, but the residents of his House might as this individual would find slavery and open genocidal warfare to be abhorent. He would be teated at best as someone of lower station, at worst an outcast to be hunted down and given the "convert or die" treatment.
