Am I Violating a Copyright? [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-11-06, 10:22 PM So, I'm statting a malevolent Outsider from a nightmare I had, similar in power to an archdevil or demon prince. I called this snake-like creature the Night Serpent, and it was supposed to have been banished to the material plane (or was somehow stuck there). Unfortunately, I was looking through the art gallery for Champions of Ruin and I discovered that there is some sort of massive evil entity in there also called the Night Serpent :eek:. If anyone out there owns CoR, could you tell me if I psychically plagiarized WotC? Any help would be appreciated.

12-11-06, 10:36 PM As long as your stats aren't "coincidentally" identical, I say you're fine. I'll bet that more than a third of the things posted on the message board are conceptually similar to some WotC material, and I don't think Wizards has sued any of them.

12-12-06, 12:03 AM The idea behind the "Night Serpent" of the FR certainly didn't originate with that setting. Variations on the theme have been a part of mythology since ancient times.
