Amber Dragon Assistance [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-28-05, 08:37 AM Long, long ago...in AD&D 2nd ed., there was once a creature called an Amber Dragon. Presumably it was a relative of the rest of the neutral, psionic Gem Dragons. However, it didn't seem to make the cut (yet) into 3rd ed.
Anyone have ANY info on them whatsoever?

11-28-05, 08:47 AM They weren't psionic. They lived in pine forests, and had the ability to encase you in a solid stone of, well, amber.

it is not in the Draconomicon or in Monster Manual II.

So does the dragon you so speak of, exist or have you gotten the name wrong?

Or its not in the 2nd Ed. books that I looked through, possibly in the monster manual for 2nd Ed.

I don't have very many FR books (1 only, its 2nd ed), though there could have been a reprint of it.

Err, no they wouldn't. There are no gem dragons at all in the XPH. Alot of psionic creatures aren't in the XPH actually...

Anyways, I just searched through the 2nd ed Monstrous Manual and a few other manuals and can't find it. Duno :confused:

11-28-05, 04:21 PM It was a neutral dragon with druid-like spellcasting abilities and a hot resinous breath weapon that both burned a target and gooed it up like a web spell.

It's not officially converted to 3.5e yet (though it might be over at EN World), but I have my article proposal to Paizo for a 3.5e amber dragon, distantly related to gem dragons.

I would also like to see some of the other nuetral dragons, such as the Jade or Pearl dragon (from MC annual vol 1) converted to 3.5.

Anyway, we're running a psionics-heavy campaign, so the Gem Dragons were an obvious hook.
Downside of the Gems being that none of them seem to get any alter-form, shapechanging sorts of powers. Since our campaign is largely urban, the ability to take a humanoid form is key.
Hm.

Suggestions are more than welcome...though I do realize this does deviate a bit from the Monsters forum purpose :confused:

Yup. I was actually referring to the rules as presented in Dragon Magazine #320 for playing Metallic Dragons as PCs. Instead of a LA, they were laid out as a 1-20 Class. Nice stuff.
A later issue covered Chromatics nicely as well.

The topaz dragon does have an innate, psionic shapechanging ability (check my sig for the proposed 3.5 update), but at great wyrm age. It, as well as the other dragons, will have to learn metamorphosis (Egoist 4, so other species will need the Expanded Knowledge feat) when it is innately at least a 7th-level psion. The other species cannot take greater metamorphosis except with Epic Expanded Knowledge because it is an Egoist 9 power.

A note about 3.5 updates from 2.0...

As I mentioned in a Future Releases thread, a creature with the same name sometimes gets a radically different makeover in the process. A good example is the 2e insectile rust dragon which is now a Acheron-native true dragon.
I would also like to see some of the other neutral dragons, such as the Jade or Pearl dragon (from MC annual vol 1) converted to 3.5.
My jade dragon is one such example of a makeover. Instead of an oriental gem dragon from Mystara, I made it a subpsionic gem dragon, first using 3.0 stats in the Psionics forum, and then with 3.5 stats in the currently off-line Third Eye (d20 psionics website). Ditto for the pearl dragon, which is the aquatic counterpart of my amber dragon (both are named after organic gemstones).

I've since updated them to 3.5 stats over at the d20 psionics website The Third Eye (http://www.kapsi.fi/~blacksmith/TheThirdEye/index.php), but it is currently off-line and the stats are still subject to review before public release.

As for the jewel dragons (amber and pearl), since I'm submitting them to Paizo, I can't post their full stats, but I can give previews. Next time though, I gotta get to work after finishing breakfast. :cookie:
