An Effigy's Templates [Archive] - Wizards Community

05-23-05, 01:53 AM On page 293 of the Monster Manual it says, "Whenever you add multiple templates, pay attention to the creature's type-you may add a template that makes the creature ineligable for other templates you might want to add."

I'm working on creatures to make for my Effigy Master, and someone told me I should make a half-dragon Remorhaz. Can I do this? The half dragon (inherited) template says it can be added to any living, corporeal creature, and the Effigy (acquired) template changes the creature type to construct.

It looks to me like the half-dragon template is no longer applicable because the creature no longer qualifies (since a construct is not alive.)

Any help would be appreciated.

That's just it, though. The Half-Dragon template is INHERITED... which means your character was born as a half-dragon Remorhaz. The Half-Dragon portion of the templates is applied to whatever the Remorhaz base creature type is(don't remember off the top of my head). You then apply the Effegy template to your Half-dragon Remorhaz(assuming that there isn't anything else in place that would prevent it, i"m not familier with Effegy), and then your half-dragon's type would become Construct.

The main difference is between Aquired and Inhereted Templates. Aquired templates are any template that can be assigned to a creature when certain obligations are fulfilled (Like Lich or Lycanthrope), while Inherited templates are assigned to your character at birth or creation, depending on certain situations. (usually from ONLY one parent, though a suppose a dragon and a Succubus sireing a child could, theoretically, result in a Half-Dragon, Half-Feind, Teifling...)

Also, it has to do with the order you apply your templates. Inherited templates HAVE to be applied first. Aquired templates can be applied in any order you wish, so long as you follow all the associate rules.

A Remorhaz is a magical beast, so I'll add the Monster of Legend Template from MM2. This turns it into an outsider and gives it some fat stat increases and some abilities that don't matter because they'll be lost later. Then I'll add the Half Dragon template which gives it even more bonuses (mostly strength, but that's all that really matters for me).

Then I'll add the Effigy template because the Remorhaz is a dragon now rather than an Outsider (an effigy can't be an outsider or undead).

Can I do that?

By the book, yes. By the book, you can have a half-iron golem paragon half farspawn half-fiendish half-celestial half-all-elemental paragon (again) half-dragon remorhaz. This is why abilities that look at HD and not CR (I'm looking at you, polymorph) suck collective behind, from a balance and a logic perspective.
