It resembles a serpent nearly thirty feet long, but it possesses a crest, wings, and four pairs of legs. It cranes its neck to gaze at you, and its eyes flash menacingly. Great basilisks are wise and powerful dragon-kin, unrelated to lesser basilisks. Amber-scaled and arrogant, great basilisks are as intelligent as common basilisks are bestial, holding themselves aloof from mortals with dragonlike disdain. On rare occasions a great basilisk will interact with mortals, either out of curiosity or as part of a bargain. More often, such interactions result in the grisly demise of the mortals. Great basilisks speak Common, Draconic, Elven and Ignan. Many also know other languages, including ancient, dead tongues. Combat: Great basilisks are terrors in combat. They approach it as something distasteful to be gotten through quickly; consequently, their strategies are devastatingly effective. If unable or unwilling to simply fly away, a great basilisk attempts to soften up the foe with its breath weapon and deadly gaze attack; it then releases the full force of its draconic body on some hapless enemy. Breath Weapon (Su): A great basilisk has a breath weapon, a 50' cone of corrosive (acid) gas. This gas deals 10d6 points of acid damage, with a Reflex save (DC 21) for half. The great baslisk can use this breath weapon at will, but must wait 1d4 rounds between breaths. The save DC is Constitution-based. Frightful Presence (Ex): A great basilisk can unsettle foes with its mere presence. This ability takes effect whenever the great basilisk attacks, charges, or flies overhead. Creatures within a radius of 60' must make Will saves (DC 20); on a failed save, creatures of 4 or fewer HD become panicked for 4d6 rounds, while those with 5 or more HD become shaken for 4d6 rounds. The save DC is Charisma-based. Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability a great basilisk must hit with a claw attack. If successful it can rake. Petrifying Gaze (Su): Turn to stone permanently, range 40'; Fortitude negates DC 23. A greater basilisk can end the effects of its own petrifying gaze at will, with no ill effects to the subject. The save DC is Constitution-based. Rake (Ex): If a great basilisk has grappled a foe it can make 6 additional claw attacks upon him, using its 6 hind claws (attack bonus +18). Spit Poison (Ex): If desired, a great basilisk can spit a lethal venom; this requires a ranged touch attack and has a range increment of 20' (max. range 100'). The Fort save DC is 21; damage is 2d6 Con/2d6 Con. The save DC is Constitution-based. I got the idea from some stories where basilisks were big, flying, intelligent dragons, not little snake-lizard things. Whattya think? PEACHes ahoy. |
| Diet_Sunkist03-22-06, 05:43 PM | I like the breath weapon, but it has its limits. narrow and leangthen the cone, so it is more like a single beam weapon. That will be avesome. |
| Diet_Sunkist03-22-06, 05:44 PM | It would help if there were statisticas to determine the breath weapon. |
| Talisman03-24-06, 04:16 PM | I like the breath weapon, but it has its limits. narrow and leangthen the cone, so it is more like a single beam weapon. That will be avesome. Well, it's based on the default breath weapon sizes for dragons (i.e., Huge dragon = 100' line or 50' cone). I could tweak it, but that would involve re-working the way cones work nowadays. It could still be a line, though. It would help if there were statisticas to determine the breath weapon. Not sure what you mean. It's a 50' cone of acidic gas, 10d6 damage, Ref DC 21 (Con-based). What's unclear? |
| Urlic_Long_Beard05-16-06, 10:56 PM | Ok, since its scale sound hard. Change the nature to +17, that shows it has great defence and a dreadful Gaze. And make it improved grab only when flying, cause it cant grab them with its hands, Unless you mean in the jaw. Just a few ideas. |
