Its jaw is filled with sharp fangs and its small eyes are pitch black. A fleshy proboscis protrudes from the fish’s forehead, ending in a bloated mass that seem to light. Anglerfishes are fishes that live in the deepest part of the sea. The feed on plankton and unfortunate fishes that wander too close of their “lure”. Anglerfishes are sexually dimorphic. The stats are those of the female, as the male is much smaller and incapable of fight. As soon as a male hatches, it finds a mate and literally merges with the female, fathering the eggs in the process. Combat Anglerfishes use their illumined lure to catch preys. Their mouths and stomachs are highly flexible, allowing them to swallow creatures larger than themselves. Bioluminescence (Ex) : The anglerfish’s lure produce a faint glow that lights in a 5-foot radius. The anglerfish can suppress and activate the light as a free action. Improved Grab (Ex) : To use this ability, an anglerfish must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow. Swallow Whole (Ex) : An anglerfish can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Small or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 1d6 points of crushing damage plus 1d6 points of acid damage per round from the anglerfish’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 2 points of damage to the anglerfish’s digestive tract (AC 12). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. So what do you think ? Feel free to post your comments. EDIT: corrected a few mistakes |

Once inside, the opponent takes 1d6+4 points of crushing damage plus 1d6 points of acid damage per round from the anglerfish’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 10 points of damage to the anglerfish’s digestive tract (AC 12). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. Hang on, are you saying these things can eat a halfling? A fish roughly the same size as a cat? |
| JiCi04-03-06, 10:53 AM | As odd as it sounds, an anglerfish can distend both its jaw and stomach, so it can swallow prey up to twice its size. For more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglerfish |
| pileobone04-03-06, 11:05 AM | heh, at a -9 grapple...I doubt it'll be dining on any pcs. Except for those pesky Natural 1's. haha, I can see it now DM: "A small fish about a foot and half long swims up to you, a small glowing orb dances before it's face." Halfling PC: "Oooh, glowy! That means magic! I cut it off and take it!" DM: "Ok, as you reach to grab it the fish bites your hand and latches on. Roll me a grapple check." Halfling PC: "Darn, ok. Crap! Natural 1" DM: "The fish swallows you." Halfline PC: :uh-huh: |
| Spike_Fightwicky04-03-06, 11:05 AM | Sorry, I'm out of witty double-entendres for PEACH Attack: Bite +4 melee (1d4-1) Full Attack: Bite +4 melee (1d4-1) Bite should be +5. (+0 BaB +3 Dex +2 Size) Special Attacks: Improved grab, swallow WHOLE My apologies, this is just a little nitpick :D Saves: Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +1 - Ref should be at +5 (+2 {dex is one of his good saves} +3 Dex) Swallow Whole (Ex) : An anglerfish can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Small or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 1d6+4 points of crushing damage plus 1d6 points of acid damage per round from the anglerfish’s digestive juices. Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. - 1d6+4 crushing damage? That's a huge amount for an 8 str creature! Are angler fish notoriously deadly eaters? Also, if it eats a tiny or small creature, maybe it should get some size mods (like change it's size bonuses/penalties to +1 size bonus to AC instead of +2, -4 penalty to grapple instead of -8, etc... Just a flavor idea) So what do you think ? Feel free to post your comments. I think it's neat! Definately something unique and refreshing. You should work on a giant anglerfish! |

(+0 BaB +3 Dex +2 Size) Oops... my bad My apologies, this is just a little nitpick :DMy bad... again Ref should be at +5 (+2 {dex is one of his good saves} +3 Dex)Darn it ! must have slept while writing 1d6+4 crushing damage? Just a flavor idea)You're right, I'll reduce the damage. I think it's neat! Definately something unique and refreshing. You should work on a giant anglerfish!Well, I'm got my hands on a handy DIRE ANIMAL template, so a dire anglerfish might be wicked. As I said earlier, anglerfishes, regardless of where I checked in books and websites, can swallow preys, much like snakes. |
| Lord_Canius04-03-06, 12:49 PM | Hehe.. a Paragon Dire Anglerfish with an Animal Growth spell cast on it.. I can see it now.. DM: Ok, you are swimming along, and in the distance you see a glowing orb of light. PC: I'll swim towards it. DM: Okay, you swim after the light, but it moves away as you do. Do you follow it? PC:  Yeah, of course. DM: Roll a spot check. PC: *rolls* Woot! Natural 20! What do I see? DM: Okay, you follow this glowing orb for a few yards, and suddenly your face to face with a gaping maw of razor sharp teeth the size of your body. PC: Oh :censored: !! |

| Purkake04-03-06, 02:15 PM | A nat 1 isn't auto-fail on opposed checks. Also how come you have to do 10 points of damage to get out but it would die at 5? Maybe give it a racial bonus on grapple checks when swallowing creatures like some other small grapplers(Stirge... well almost). |

| Purkake04-03-06, 02:33 PM | Oh yeah I almost forgot: cool monster. We need more of those little just-there-for-the-fun creatures instead of all the scary kill-you-dead and ask questions later monsters. So keep up the good work. PS. Also you might want to mention that the bioluminescence is 5ft of shadowy illumination like a candle. It makes it a little more like the "official" moster descriptions. :) |
| Lord_Canius04-04-06, 12:12 AM | A friendly :bump: to a kindred soul, to save you from the black despair that is Page 2 of the Thread List. |
| JiCi04-04-06, 07:17 AM | he he, thanks. I already posted the link in the Monster Archive to immortalize this monster. |
