Treasure None Alignment Always neutral good Advancement By character class Level Adjustment -- A delicate, graceful deer step out of the forest. It blurs, and becomes a female humanoid. She appears human or perhaps elven, except that she is covered with a fine, downy fur. Her ears are the large, oval ears of a deer, her eyes are large and dark, and small antlers grace her brow. She regards you shyly. Also known as deer maidens, fawnlings and forest dancers, cerveyls are shy, graceful fey with an affinity for deer. A cerveyl has two forms: that of a normal deer, and that of an elvish humanoid with deerlike features. In either form, cerveyls have the mentality of unusually intelligent deer: they are shy and wary, unaggressive and prone to flee if startled. Unlike deer, both male and female cerveyls bear antlers, although both genders' are smaller than those of true deer. Cerveyls travel with herds of deer, occasionally dallying with dryads, nymphs and satyrs. They guide their cervine charges away from mortals, but demonstrate little fear of them themselves unless they have been hunted. If befriended, a cerveyl will accept a mortal as a member of her herd. The offspring of cerveyls and other fey have an equal chance to be of either race; cerveyls and deer produce deer 75% of the time, and cerveyls and mortals always produce more cerveyls. In Spring, male cerveyls undergo a personality change. They become bolder and more aggressive, almost satyrlike in attitude. However, unlike deer, cerveyls are monogamous: once a pair has formed, they remain together for many years at the least. A typical cerveyl has a height and weight identical to an elf. Cerveyls speak Sylvan, although haltingly. They can communicate freely with deer. Combat: Cerveyls avoid combat whenever possible; like many prey animals, they stand and fight only if cornered or desperate. Male cerveyls will shield the females, and cerveyls will defend their deer herd if necessary, but they much prefer to vanish into the underbrush. If combat is inevitable, cerveyls will strike with their antlers. Alternate Form (Su): A cerveyl can assume the form of a deer at will (stats as a pony). Beguiling Presence (Su): Cerveyls are among the most graceful and charming of the fey, and their mere presence has a supernatural effect. Any humanoids or monstrous humanoids within 30' of a cerveyl must make a DC 16 Will save or become attracted to the cerveyl (treat as charmed) for 24 hours. If the cerveyl remains nearby, a new Will save must be made for every hour the mortal remains conscious; each subsequent failed save increases the intensity of the mortal's emotions, and extends the duration by 12 hours. After 2 failed saves, the mortal would willingly be injured or injure (but not kill) his friends to protect the cerveyl. After 3 failed saves, the subject would kill or die to protect the cerveyl. After 4 failed saves, the subject is uttery enamoured of the cerveyl, and will react violently to any attempts to separate them. Cerveyls appear to be unaware of the effect they have on mortals; they react with shy amusement to the attention of charmed mortals, and make no attempt to either exploit or suppress this ability. Characters who would not normally be attracted to the cerveyl's gender gain a +4 bonus on their saves vs. beguiling presence. This is a mind-affecting charm effect; the save DC is Charisma-based. Unearthly Echoes (Su): Any creature charmed by a fawnling will begin to exhibit minor features characteristic of the fey. After 1 hour, the affected character will sprout tiny horn buds, a fine coat of fur, or find their toes fusing into hooves. These features become more pronounced with each day that passes. Once the character is removed from the cerveyl's influence, these features will fade with the passage of time, requiring a equal amount of time away from the fey before they are gone completely. These features provide no mechanical effects. It is rumored that those who remain with the forest dancers for long enough will find themselved irrevocably transformed into new cerveyls themselves. Wild Empathy (Ex): A cerveyl has the wild empathy as a druid of level equal to his Hit Dice (usually 4). When influencing deer, a cerveyl gains a +5 racial bonus on his wild empathy check. A :cookie: to anyone who can guess the book I got these from! |
| ChimericPhase07-27-07, 11:53 PM | I don't know what book it's from, but I find them fascinating. I must find a way to include them in my game. |
| baby_kamikaize_kobold07-28-07, 01:30 AM | thats a very interesting creature is it race of the wilderness? |
| Talisman07-28-07, 10:36 PM | thats a very interesting creature is it race of the wilderness? It's a sylvan fey, if that's what you mean...it's not from Races of the Wild, since I invented it myself. The book I refer to is a fantasy/SF novel, not a gaming book. |
| The Vorpal Tribble07-29-07, 02:24 PM | The theme for this critter is great and oddly relaxing. I love fey :D The numbers also seem to be all accurate. Maybe also give them the ability to slightly alter humanoids for as long as they are charmed? Give them very minor antlers, cloven feet, scent, or something to that affect. These then fade away within a day after they are no longer charmed. Adds a bit of the eerie 'whats going on here' that fey do so well with. |

Excellent idea; I shall so edit it. |
