From out of nowhere, a jet black creature shoots towards you. As it embeds its long, pointed head into your body, you can make out a squid-shaped body, four long arms, ending in razor-sharp claws, and glowing red eyes.

Blackspears are vicious, territorial predators, and are very closely related to darkmantles. Blackspears are naturally drawn to shiny objects, which they store inside a pouch in their mouths. Upon dying, the blackspear instinctively regurgitates the treasures. The average blackspear is 3 feet in length and weighs about 15 pounds. Blackspears do not speak.

COMBAT

Blackspears prefer to rocket down hallways and corridors, charging forward at breakneck speeds, before attacking whatever creature has the most shiny possessions first. Their poison helps incapacitate stubborn foes, by weakening and then harming the victim.

Arrow Flight (Ex): A blackspear can move at a fly speed of 120 feet as long as they move in a straight line. They use this ability to catapult down corridors with a deadly charge, or to make a quick escape into the sky.
Poison (Ex): Any creature that is hit by a blackspear’s pierce attack is injected with a virulent poison. Initial damage: 2d4 Strength, secondary damage: 1d6 Constitution. A DC 20 fortitude save negates the damage, and the save is Constitution based. This serves to first weaken foes, so they do not pose much of a threat while the blackspear takes out the targets allies. The secondary effect of the venom helps the blackspear kill the target easier.

*Blackspears have a +10 racial bonus on grapple checks.
**On a charge, a blackspear's pierce attack uses twice its Strength bonus (1d8+6 damage).

I'm guessing a manueverability of perfect? Or at least good?

Attack: Pierce +10 melee (1d8+3 plus poison)
Full Attack: 4 claws +10 melee (1d6+3) and pierce +10 melee (1d8+3 plus poison)

Attack bonus is wrong. Should be +12 (+8 BAB, +3 Str, +1 size).

Why do its secondary attacks and primary attacks have the same attack bonus? Secondary attacks are at -5, or at -2 with Multiattack. Shouldn't this be pierce +12 melee, 4 claws +10 melee?

Saves: Fort +8, Ref +8, Will +9

Fort save should be +7 (+3 base, +4 Con)

Skills: Hide +23, Spot +20, Listen +20, Climb +19

An 11-HD aberration with an Int of 2 has 14 skill points, with a maximum of 14 ranks per skill. Dropping ability/size mods, you've got: Hide 14 ranks, Spot 18 ranks, Listen 18 ranks, Climb 16 ranks (that's 69 points). A wee bit excessive.

Challenge Rating: 7

It's got the Hit Dice, but this seems a bit weak for CR 7...its attacks, though numerous, are fairly weak. I'd peg it at 6-ish.

 Slot machine monsters! Hit 'em enough and they spit out money!
Much less icky than cutting the monster up to see if it swallowed any valuables.

Thanks! I forgot the Multi-attack rules a bit, and upped the Strength after the attack bonuses, so I forgot to factor that in.

As for the slot-machine thing, how else is a flying, poisonous, clawed, and pointy squid-thing supposed to carry cash around? :D

Hilarious.

Fighter: *156 damage* cool I killed it! Ooh whats this? Whoa tons of incredibally shiny 4 karat diamond!!!
Cleric: What?
Fighter: Diamonds!!!!
Cleric: Great we can revive the wizard!
Fighter: No way! He gets paid by kings and his apprentices give him birthday gifts! And all I get is a dead trainer for my birthday! Mine!

Anyways I think the pierce attack should do double strength damage because it is going really fast and goring his opponent at a really fast speed. Just my opinion.

That would be pretty close to the lances charge, and it operates on the same general idea.

I see your point on the pierce attack. It has been edited.

On the funny note, more creatures should be so polite with treasure dispensing.

On a charge it should be 2d8+6, since you should double the die.

He said "Double Strength Damage," not double damage. That might be overkill.

Yup! The comedic purposes of the blackspear know no bounds. Just think, the cleric's gem-encrusted, golden holy symbol; the wizard's gold-leafed, glowing spellbook; the rogue's sack-o-loot; and more!

is there gonna be a black hammer which sets on the ground and wraps its limbs around someone, then using the heavy spherical ends of their tentacles to bash in your skull?

That's a great idea! I'm going to be away for the week, but I'll stat that out next weekend when I get home. Your'e awesome, Skydin!

What CR were you thinking?
skydin

07-06-07, 11:06 PM
really, because all i was thinking is the SHARP tentacles could be rather painfull...i have some issues.

aparently im even more helpful when im limiting myself due to the lack of mature in front of a forum label.KEWL.

also, make it about CR12, and give it really cool grapple bonuses and such. maybe give it a fly and borrowing speed, so it can rush down a hall liek hte peirce one, wrap around your head in a hih-speed grapple and start beating you to death, or pop up from a tunnel and super-trip with tentacleness. also it should be medium if not large.
