| Necropolitan04-17-06, 02:53 PM | As many of you have probably noticed; the boards are flooded by a constant stream of 'wut r stats fr teh gunblade?' and 'I want to be a half-inu demon!!?11" crap. I like video games and movies/anime as much as the next guy, but seriously, who in they're right mind would allow this kind of thing in a D20 game period? I swear I tried running a game at my local hobbyshop, and as soon as I realized that my characters all had katana and long white or blonde hair, I quit. So, since this is the monster's forum, and I see yet another 'OMG THIS TV SHOW WUZ SO KEWL' thread proposing monsters, let's look at what a GOOD Video Game monster port could be. Pyramid Head. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e357/JadonP/pyramidheadjpg.jpg Now for all those who have played Silent Hill, this could widely be accepted as one of the few truly epic, unique monsters, in Vein with the Tarrasque and so forth, you've got it all in this VG port, sinister coutence, unmatched brutality, and a relentless, hostile and hellish nature that would make even the most hardened Fighter soil his chainmail. If a DM introduced this in a low-level or Heros of Horror augmented 3.5 game, I'd personally get a little paranoid, just a thought at it's possable abilites, Damage Reduction out the ass, Slam attacks, hell the gigantic butcher's knife - all make for a far better monster then a cheap vampire ripped off a TV show. Now this isn't a request for stats on Pyramid head, nor a 'ZOMG THAT WUZ KEWL' thread from a fanboy, but a logical akwnoladgement that some things from our beloved eletronic games, just don't belong in our even more beloved Pen-and-Paper pursuits. So in end to rant - when porting media characters, think of the PCs, think of the DM, think of our sanity. |
| Koji04-17-06, 03:18 PM | Just 'cause my reply to the guy who wanted pyramid head got no love: Pyramid Head is an outsider--he is composed of the essence of the Otherworld. The fact that the Otherworld is a part of the Prime Material plane gives him the native trait. Pyramid Head Medium Outsider (Native, Evil) Hit Die: 14d8+59 (122 HP) Speed: 30ft Armor Class: 26 (Dex +2 Nat +4 Armor +10) Flat-Footed 24, Touch 12 BAB/Grapple: +12/+15 Attack: Great Knife 2d8+4 or Longspear+4 1d10+7 Full Attack: +13 Great Knife 2d8+4/+6 Great Knife 2d8+4 or +19 Longspear+4 1d10+7/+13 Longspear 1d10+7 Face/Reach: 5/5ft (or 5/10ft with great knife or longspear) Special Attacks: Tongue 1d8+3 Special Qualities: Helmet, Darkvision 120 ft., Outsider Traits, Spell Resistance 16, Damage Reduction 10/good Saves: Fort:13 Ref:11 Will:13 Abilities: Str: 16 Dex: 14 Con: 19 Int: 15 Wis: 18 Cha: 10 Skills: +21 Spot, +20 Intimidate, +20 Jump, +13 Swim, +20 Climb, +20 Search, +10 Move Silently, +10 Sense Motive, +8 Bluff Feats: Monkey Grip, Improved Grapple, Improved Unarmed Strike, Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Cleave, Toughness. Environment: Any Organization: Single or Cabal (2-6) CR: 14 Alignment: Always Lawful Evil Racial Feats: Pyramid Head recieves Improved Unarmed Strike and Monkey Grip as racial feats. Racial Proficiencies: Pyramid Head is automatically proficient with the Longspear and Great Knife. Tongue (ex): Every round that it succeeds its grapple check, Pyramid Head's black, snakelike tongue darts from a gap in the side of the mask and stabs through its victim, dealing automatic tongue damage. Helmet (ex): Pyramid Head's namesake helmet is actually fused to his head and shoulders, and adds a +5 Armor Bonus along with a +5 enhancement bonus. Additionally, the helmet is extraordinarily heavy (50 pounds, the characters may note that this seems almost too heavy for its size) and painful to wear. Only Pyramid Head may gain the bonus from said helmet. Great Knife: Pyramid Head's Great Knife is made entirely of rusted iron, and despite the enchantments covering it, is extremely heavy; perhaps representative of the burden an executioner bears. This 20-pound blade weighs Pyramid Head down enough to take him to a medium load, greatly slowing him down. The Great knife is treated in all other respects as a +4 greatsword sized for a large creature. Pyramid Head is never seen with both the great knife and the longspear, as he would be far too encumbered. Pyramid Head appears to be a six and a half foot tall humanoid male dressed in a white butcher's smock covered in old blood and grime. His ghost-white skin, clammy and cold, tightly clings to ropy muscles. He stomps around in knee-high leather boots, and his head is covered by a heavy and bizarre iron helmet. Silent Hill's monsters are created partially by the town's own power (its connection to the Other World, the rusted, bloody world seen in the games), and partially through the feelings of the people who are trapped in this world. It is generally pain and hatred that controls this place, and this gives birth to horrifying monsters. Pyramid Head is a lingering memory of Silent Hill's executioners of old, returned to life through someone's feelings of self-loathing. Pyramid Head generally only appears to those who feel they need to be punished, though if others are accompanying such a person, Pyramid Head may appear before them, trying to torment and destroy them as well. Pyramid Head never speaks, and though he is personified as a single entity, he can appear in more than one form at the same time. Even if slain, Pyramid Head is made of the essence of the Other World and can never truly be defeated, and will always return again until his target comes to terms with thier feelings of self-hatred and severs their connection to the Otherworld. Pyramid Head is sustained by the power of the Otherworld and does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe. Pyramid Head also represents repression and frustration, and may symbolically unleash these feelings on anything he comes across in his search for his victim. Take this and implement it as you will. If you've played SH2, you know what I'm talking about. Combat: Pyramid Head's tactics are often based off of his current weapon. While using the Great Knife, he is a lumbering titan, dragging it behind him ominously with one arm as he approaches his victim, then coming in with either a slow but incredibly powerful overhead swing, or a quicker but often less deadly side-sweep. If an opponent gets too close or proves too quick for his knife, he simply uses his improved grapple and attacks with his snakelike tongue. He will generally either follow his target from afar, carefully watching until they are in a position where he would have the advantage, or he waits in closed off areas, using the powers of the Otherworld to lock doors behind characters and trap them. If it becomes clear that victory is unlikely, he will seem to lose interest and walk away, stopping only to take attacks of opportunity if anyone comes near. When equipped with the longspear, he is fast and deadly, barelling towards his opponents and quickly impaling them. He often uses his improved bull rush along with a charge attack to knock opponents off of ledges or back them into walls. He takes advantage of his strong defenses by seeming to not care about his own survival. When more than one Pyramid Head is present, they seem to share one mind, and work together in perfect harmony to divide and destroy their enemies. Pyramid Head works best if you introduce him fairly early on in the game. Wielding his great knife, he can quickly kill a low-level PC, but they'll know to run if they witness him quickly dispatching monsters that they've had trouble with. His low speed while wielding the knife makes it easy to get away from him, and if the players notice his damage reduction (it should seem like ranged attacks always ding off his helmet, blades don't cut his flesh, and blunt weapons seem to bounce right off of him), they'll realize early on what they're up against. Try using him to herd them into areas they might not otherwise go, or to inadvertantly open up new areas (throwing a player through a wall comes to mind). |
