Think of the HD as class levels. If they go up--so too does everything else. Thus, a 5 HD wolf is significantly mor powrerful than a 2 HD wolf. What's more, the 5 HD wolf may well be large size (which entails its own bonuses/penalties as outlined in the MM).

02-13-06, 06:53 AM The wolf gets extra hp/saves/bab/feats/skill points from its extra HD. In addition, it gets bumped to large size, which will further affect its stats according to the MM.
