| Mysk06-22-05, 04:12 PM | Alright. I've reached a bit of a rut so to speak. I am a level 12 druid with a Fleshraker animal companion (Monster Manual 3) (Druid level -3) His stats are... Str 20 Dex 22 Con 16 (+1 for advancing HD) Int 2 Wis 14 Cha 12 BAB +7 Feats on top of the two he came with are Blind fight at 6 hd, and can't figure out the second one at 9hd. I don't know if I should list the attacks. but I am confused at something. I can't figure out how to progress the Rake Damage. Or even how to figure out how it's done. As it stands he's got some pretty nice attacks for a companion. I love the poison, and the leaping theory, but I can't quite put it down mechanicaly. How many attacks does this guy get? For example... Charge = Full attack + Rake attack (Which is unprogressed cause I can't figu out how) -- FOllowed by trip attempt. followed by grapple. Now after it's grappled. what exactly are we looking at? how many claw attacks? 2 claws + rake? Should I quote the Leaping Pounce ability this guy has from the book? |

The benefits are that his Strength does continue to grow, giving and increase to both his melee attack bonus and his damage. Also, I'm not terribly sure but monsters should not again the additional ability point that PCs gain for class levels at every 4th HD. The rake is somewhat confusing, basically it can only make rake attempts during a charge (in addition to a full-round attack, so 2 claws, a bite, then a rake as it cannot use its tail on a creature it bites). Against a creature it has pinned, it can also rake in addition to a claw attack. Again, if it charges it gets to make all of its attacks, plus the rake. If it has someone pinned, it makes one claw and one rake attack. The MM describes rake as a special attack that provides two additional attacks that inflict claw damage when the creature has an opponent pinned. This seems contrary to what is written in the monster entry. Also, I cant figure out why it has a +2 modifier to damage, as its too high to be one-half of its Strength bonus, but not high enough to be the full bonus. |
| Mysk06-22-05, 05:47 PM | Ability Score Improvement Treat monster Hit Dice the same as character level for determining ability score increases. This only applies to Hit Dice increases, monsters do not gain ability score increases for levels they "already reached" with their racial Hit Dice, since these adjustments are included in their basic ability scores. I can't quite figure out how to mark those things into quotes. http://d20srd.org/ but I guess this guy gets his +1 point cause I coulda sworn I read it in the monster manual as well. But on to other things... I couldn't figure out the mechanic for figuring out how they even got the rake attack at all. and it seems a lot of what this dino's pounce does and his own custom rake as I see it is basicaly that. which makes it kinda hard to progress... |
