I'm starting a new campaign (My first proper one btw) and when I was looking up Rats in the MM I noticed that for damage it had 1d3-4. Now I have two problems with this, 1 is that I don't have a d3 and the second is it can't, EVER, do any damage! I must be missing something here...

EDIT: I just read the bit in the beginning saying that even if it's reduced to bellow 0 it still does one, and I was about to ask why not just list zero then when I realized that it would multiply by 2 on a critical so... crisis averted. I really do need to read the MM cover to cover I guess...

also, you don't need a d3 just use a d6.

It can also deal more damage because of effects that increase its size, strength, or similar factors, but you seem canny enough to figure that out on your own.

There are a number of styles of d3 available (triangular rods and twin digit dice being the ones I've seen the most), they just usually don't come with any standard dice.

Thanks Slagger, but I really should have searched the SRD before posting here.
