| treetrunker11-28-06, 08:36 PM | Animated Book Tiny Construct Hit Dice: 1/2d10, 2 hp Initiative: +2 Speed: 10 ft. fly 30 ft. (good) Armor Class: 14 BAB/Grapple: +0/+2 Attack: Slam +1 melee (1d3-1) Space/Reach: 1/1/0 ft. Special Attacks: Improved Grab Special Qualities:Construct traits, blindsense 60 Saves: Fort +0, Ref +2, Will -5 Abilities: Str 8, Dex 14, Con -, Int -, Wis 1, Cha 1 Skills:- Feats:- Environment: Bookshelf Organization: solitary, group (2-14), or shelf (15-100) Challenge Rating: 1/4 Treasure: none Alignment: - Advancement: - Level Adjustment: (I don't think a character would want to be a book ;)) Improved Grab: If it hits with a slam attack, it can make a grapple check with no AoO. If it succeeds, it latches on to the opponent. There is a 10% chance that it latches on to the head of the target, if so, it does 1d6 damage per succesful grapple check. Otherwise it does 1d4. It can also attack hands or feet, which would incur a -2 penalty to attack for a hand, as well as preventing the character from casting spells with somatic components. If attached to a foot, an animated book is effectively a caltrop. These penalties remain until for 1d4 hours, or until healed, either magically, or with a skill check. The player can cast spells once he has removed the book if he makes a DC 10 Concentration check. |

Special Attacks: Grab, bookshelf leap Special Qualities:Construct traits, darkvision 60 ft., low light vision darkvision? low-light vision? it has no eyes. just give it blindsence. Bookshelf Leap: If on a book shelf, an animated book can leap 15 ft out from the book shelf, and can attempt to grapple. looks good! I'll definitely use it as a little surprise for my little brother. he's a loremaster so it will be great! |
| psipup11-28-06, 10:19 PM | I have a personal preference for giving animated books a fly speed, mostly just because I like the image of a swarm of tomes fluttering about by their covers, make a racket of shuffling paper sounds whilest battering at a goup os furprised heroes. I bring it up purely as something you might consider as an alternate mode of mobility than just shuffling along the ground. |
| treetrunker11-28-06, 10:58 PM | Thanks for the kind words. Heh, the darkvision and low-light vision is from me taking the tiny construct template, and then adding my changes. What exactly is blindsense, and from what book is it? Wow, talk about my wierd speak;) . I'm not sure if I want to give it a fly speed... Aw, what the heck, sure. What should it be, and what kind of maneuverability? Thanks again, and hopefully keep the comments coming!! |
| treetrunker11-29-06, 06:53 PM | Oh no, the horror!!! :bump: |
| dengarbountyhunter11-29-06, 07:32 PM | Please, create an Animated Book swarm! |
| Watchdog_of_Hades11-29-06, 07:38 PM | I'd say a fly of 30 feet, and good manueverability. I mean, a bird can fly a lot faster, and only has two wings instead of hundreds! |
| treetrunker11-29-06, 08:26 PM | update: fly speed added Since you have requested it, I will begin work on an animated book swarm. Any other tips/comments/ideas? Things bugging you, things you like? hmm? |
| TheCrawlingSpleen11-30-06, 12:45 PM | Maybe they should have a weakness against fire. They're made out of paper, after all. That brings up some other options. Soaking an animated book with water might take away its fly speed. In addition, maybe they have a special attack based on papercuts, like if somebody hits one with an unarmed strike, there's a chance they get a painfully annoying wound :evillaugh. It probably wouldn't do damage, but might impose some kind of penalty. All of these are more humor-oriented, but I figured I'd put them out there anyway. This is a great little creature, especially for us Army of Darkness fans. :D |
| forrestfire1511-30-06, 02:16 PM | it needs a bit attack...that gives papercuts:devil: |
| treetrunker11-30-06, 08:27 PM | What the heck is Army of Darkness? Anyway, I'll try to see if I can put together some more stuff. Im mainly working on my campaign setting and the animated book swarm at the moment, but ill have to see what i can do;) |
| TheCrawlingSpleen11-30-06, 09:51 PM | What the heck is Army of Darkness? It's a movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106308/) that contains (among other things) a particularly memorable and humorous fight scene with an animated book. :D |
| spncrbrrtt12-01-06, 03:01 PM | Blindsence is when you have no eyes but you can see the things around you. think of any bruce lee movie. On that has the parts where he is hopelessly outnumbered. then he kicks all their asses with his eyes closed. that's blindsence. it has a range like darkvision, so I'd give it blindsence 60 |
| treetrunker12-01-06, 06:38 PM | UPDATE: I have added blindsense. I have also removed the bookshelf leap ability, because this is solved by the fly speed, and there is no need for it anymore. |
| mvincent12-01-06, 06:49 PM | Curious: what was wrong with the stats for a tiny animated object (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/animatedObject.htm) provided in the monster manual? As a book, it would even be allowed a fly speed of 30' (per RAW). |
| spncrbrrtt12-01-06, 09:06 PM | Curious: what was wrong with the stats for a tiny animated object (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/animatedObject.htm) provided in the monster manual? It wouldn't be as fun that way. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht12-02-06, 12:19 AM | should be 5 hp. No, it should be 2. 1d10 averages out to 5, halved is 2. |

| dragor_shadowfury12-03-06, 09:16 AM | (I don't think a character would want to be a book ;)) and i had already begun to concider making an awakened animated book rogue/monk or ninja/monk:P anyway, i really think it should have weakness to fire, and some papercut special ability... no wait that is included in the lasting penalties for being grappedled by it i guess BTW the monstrous monster book from harry potter comes into mind |
| treetrunker12-03-06, 11:49 AM | BTW the monstrous monster book from harry potter comes into mind Amazingly, I didn't think of that while creating this... On another note, do you think i should have level adjustment for the book? If anything it could be negative... |
| dragor_shadowfury12-03-06, 12:17 PM | i defenitely think it should have LA, partly since i'm cocidering to make one with rogue levels but for what it should be, i have no idea, or that is, maybe -1/2 to offset the half hit die, but then again, it would need an intelligence score |
| treetrunker12-03-06, 04:16 PM | I'm not sure. I don't think that a construct is a playable character. I'll have to think about it. |
| dragor_shadowfury12-04-06, 08:23 AM | well, at least i'll use a group of awakened animated book rogues in the maze of wierdness (made by a bronze :dragon: nuff said) |
