MM1 states that an animated object can retain its hardness ... (p13) now I'm sketching out some animated spiked chains which, according to the table of object hardness in the PHB (p166) that would give them a hardness of 10, which looks to be like damage resistance 10/- which seems a bit steep to me.
How do the rest of you read it?

You could make it 10/any harder metal.

But it's not really damage reduction. It's hardness, which some forms of attack ignore.

Adamantine bypasses hardness of anthing less than 20, thus all animated steel objects would have 10/Adamantine, stone would have 8/Adamantine, and wood would have 5/Adamantine. So a steel chain wouldn't have 10/-, it would be 10/Adamantine unless it was made of adamantine then it would be 20/-.

BTW a spike chain is a good application of animate object for the constricting special ability and for visual imagery.

I like Huge sheets cut in a pattern to have four legs (with a pocket to hold cargo.)

Adamantine cuts through objects with the same ease steel cuts through mundane flesh (which is why an adamantine dagger is better than thieves picks) Hope this helps.

So, DR 10/adamantite? Thanks ... I see the room in question becoming more of a terrain hazard than an encounter in that case.

Thinking of adding armour spike damage to the chains constrict - and maybe the slam as well.

Just for some background the encounter is a room of about 25' diameter with the central square occupied by a statue. The statue, for reference, is of the Lady of Pain (a Loviatar type deity), but could just as easily be of a prisoner, a kyton or whatever. Wrapped around it are four spiked chains.
Anyone entering the room gets about half way around and then the chains go online and attack. Yes, the statue is more fragile than the chains, and might actually be worth something. Until it is destroyed the chains are anchored and stay in the room. Destroy it and the damned things follow them everywhere. Nice. To adjust the EL, alter the number of chains that animate.
EL is still to be calculated.
