Vator 10-27-05, 12:55 PM	According to the SRD, spell-like abilities need no material components or focus items. How would a 'Trap the Soul' spell-like ability work? Where would the soul go?
cwslyclgh 10-27-05, 05:21 PM	it would still need a gem, SLA's do not require focus items if they are not integral to the functioning of the spell, but they do require them if they are (Such as from trap the soul, soul bind, or magic jar). As a DM I would be lienient and say that any object that roughly matches that needed for the spell would work though (for instance the gem for trap the soul would not need to be of the correct value based upon the creatures HD, any gem would do).
