anthro-godly? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-09-04, 02:41 PM Ok, am I just reading something wrong in Savage Species about the anthropomorphic races? They just seem....godly for the low LA's they're being assigned.

African Elephant-
+12 str +2 Dex +5 Con +4 Wis....no minuses
+7 NA
Large creature
+2 LA only?

Wolverine-
+4 Str +4 Dex +8 Con +4 Wis +2 Cha....wolverine with a bonus to Cha?
+2 NA
Med creature
+2 La

I just don't get these stats, and how they could possibly be only deserving a +2 LA...explain please?

04-09-04, 02:52 PM I think the LA are lowered because you are forced to take 3 or 2 animal HD.

That being said, the elephant one is still low i think

04-09-04, 02:56 PM meaning what...that you're technically taking the equivalent of 2-3 more levels to warrant the use of such high bonuses? it mentions in SS that small creatures have 1 HD, med 2 HD, and large 3 HD, so does that mean if I start a new anthro Wolverine that with the LA and HD's it's be an effective 4th lvl char?

Say you're making an Anthro because your DM graciously agreed to let you use an ECL character to "catch up" with a party that's already been playing for a while. (hinthint :D )

So, those bonuses in Table A-58 are applied like a regular race, or are they applied to the "base" form's stats?

Just seems wierd to me, since if it's the later, all Anthro Wolves have 19 DEX and CON.....:confused:

Don't worry about the base race because it's not like your combining an elf and a wolf or human and an eagle, but your taking the base animal and modifiying it into a humaniod version of that creature by magical means.

But say you just roll out your abilities and happen to (for arguments sake) roll out six 10's. If you were using these (crap) ability scores as your bases for your antho wolf's ability scores, your finalized scores would be as follows.

Str-12
Dex-14
Con-14
Int-10
Wis-14
Cha-10

With 2d8 extra hit points at lvl one from the 2 HD of being an antho creature. But your an effective char of 4, because the LA+2 and your 2 HD. The LA+2 is just there because you get dumb bonuses to ability scores, along with NA and base land speed of 40 and whatnot.

Get it? Got it? Good.

04-11-04, 07:51 PM It should be clarified... animal HD are not worth as much as a PC class level. I think it's about 1/2 (using Soldarin's class calculator) but your mileage may vary.

So my view is that something with a few animal HD has already paid HD/2 in LA.
