One of my players is asking about playing a Wearfox and I am inclined to let him have it in our v3.5 ECL 10 FR campaign.

Unfortunately, I can't find any stats for a fox animal to use with the lycanthrope template. Does anyone here know if there are v3.0/v3.5 stats for a fox in a book that I must not know about (like a splatbook or something)?

There's stats for artic foxes in Frostburn. It should work decent with slight modifications for other kinds of foxes too.

Oriental Adventures has some stats for a fox, under the entry on (Fox) Hengeyokai in the Races section.

Wearfoxes are all the rage right now. Nothing's more fashionable. I wear a Wearfox™, and not only does it keep me warm from the coming winter season, but also I turn all the ladies' eyes -- and smiles -- to me.

Wearfoxes™ -- don't leave home without one!

Can't really help with your question, but encourage foxes in campaigns! They're some of the best animals around, and who knows what enjoyable havoc could ensue with Wearfoxes running around? I vote for a new entry in the Monster Manual, including every possible type of fox! :D

In Japanese folklore at least, foxes have some supernatural powers. If you wanted to implement this, you could either create a new type of fox with some magic (superfox!) or perhaps have some villagers in the campaign being skittish towards foxes (which would allow for some plot complications with your werefox character!). Just an idea, you don't have to try it.

Yes, it was in the Monsterous Manual, I dont own the book but my DM at the time did. It went on to say they were very vain and gelous of any other such creatures in the territory, ones that kept men as pets that is and that they like elf men (lol elf men) noticable more, thats what it said about the natural lycanthrops anyway, I forgot what it said about infected.

The werefoxes (or rather, foxweres, to use the AD&D nomenclature: "werecritters" for people who can turn into critters, and "critterweres" for critters who can turn into people) were inspired by the foxwomen from Chinese and Japanese myths (Kitsune), that's why they were only women. A sort of landbound, Asian equivalent of the Sirine, with fox instead of fish. (That's cuter, IMHO. :P)

And yes they were vain and jealous. (I'm dont think they were gelous, though. To the contrary, their own particular idiom was rather hot and sultry.)

An old 3e-conversion of the 2e-werefox can be found on on http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?threadid=3808. IIRC this text also covers most of the concepts which made this werecritter quite unique among the other 2e-werebeasts. A normal Fox is also included.

If you look for something official: The "Ravenloft Gazetter 1" also included a conversion of this werebeast.

This is a conversion of the Hu Hsien from the Kara-Tar Monstrous Compendium and 1e OA.

This one is based on the Fox Spirits from Chinese Folklore. Most of the spells that are described as being from OA should be in the Complete Arcane now. I'm still not sure if the CR (might be too high) and LA (+4 might be more appropriate than +6) are right, as I never tested them, but they seem balanced to me.

Hu Xian (Hu Hsien)
Medium Fey (Shapechanger, Spirit)
Hit Dice: 6d6+6(27)
Initiative: +4
Speed: 40 ft. (8 squares)
AC: 21 (+4 Dex, +4 deflection, +3 natural) touch 18, flat-footed 17
Base Attack/ Grapple: +3/+3
Attack: Dagger +7 melee (1d4/19-20)
Full Attack: Dagger +7 melee (1d4/19-20), or bite +7 melee (1d4)
Space/Reach: 5 ft/ 5 ft
Special Attacks: Energy Drain, Spell-like abilities, Spells
Special Qualities: Alternate Form, Damage Reduction 10/iron, Darkvision 60 ft, Fire Immunity, Lightning Vulnerability, Resistance to Cold 10, Spell Resistance 21, Spirit’s Grace

The true nature of this beautiful woman is finally revealed, hanging from her lower back is the tail of a fox. She smiles mischievously before melting into the shape of a fox.

A Hu Xian is a mischievous and cunning spirit. She’s perhaps the most powerful variety of fox spirits. Hu Xian are exclusively female and are thought to be the progenitors of werefoxes (sometimes known as Hu Li Jing). As a shapechanger she lives between two states, as a fox she has rust coloured or silver fur and can walk on her hind legs and hold items with her paws. As a woman she is exceptionally beautiful with typically long black flowing hair, golden skin and brown eyes. She often wears long robes to hide her foxtail when in humanoid forms.
Many Hu Xian are infamous for being wicked and cruel. They are manipulative and greedy women known for their very ability to drain away the life of men who they’ve seduced. It is said that because of these ways the gods sent out their thunder gods to punish them. Hu Xian are quite afraid of lightning storms because of the thunder gods.
But the Hu Xian aren’t entirely cruel, they do take well to generosity and kindness, and will kindly reward people for such acts. She’s particularly attracted to scholars and other intellectuals and will do a lot to help one she befriends. Because of her benevolence, some people either worship her or petition for her assistance in the form of gifts such as money, jewellery and prayers.
Hu Xian gain their sustenance from draining the vital energy of men who they exploit. Though they do enjoy wine and other spirits, however a drunken Hu Xian reverts to the form of a fox unless she succeeds on a fort save of DC 20. She can speak common, any regional languages from where she resides, the spirit tongue and sylvan.
Combat
Hu Xian generally avoid combat when they can as they are manipulators and not fighters. However they have a variety of special abilities and spells that help them confuse, trick and manipulate opponents. Most Hu Xian prefer spells from the schools of divination, enchantment, and illusion.
Alternate Form (Su): A Hu Xian may assume the form of a fox or a humanoid woman. In fox form her size is small.
Energy Drain (Su): A Hu Xian drains energy from her victims through her company with a willing victim. She drains one level a day from her victim putting her him under the effect of a Suggestion spell urging him to stay with her and to hopelessly love her. The negative level has a fort save DC of 17 to remove and her Suggestion has a will save DC or 17. The save is charisma based.
Spell-like Abilities (Sp): At will – Apparition (OA; DC 16), Charm Monster (in humanoid form only; DC 18), Comprehend Languages, Detect Thoughts (DC 16), Hypnotic Pattern (DC 16), Invisibility, Legend Lore, Polymorph (humanoid form only, no limit on duration), Read Magic, Speak with Animals, Ventriloquism. 1/day – Magic Jar (DC 19), Major Creation, Servant Horde (OA). 3/week – Bestow Greater Curse (BoVD; DC 22) or Limited Wish (only when rewarding another). Caster level 10th, Save DCs are charisma based.
Spells: As an 8th level sorcerer.
Typical sorcerer spells known (6/7/7/6/4; save DC 14 + spell level):
0—Detect Magic, Ghost Sound, Light, Mage Hand, Message, Prestidigitation, Resistance, Touch of Fatigue; 1st— Expeditious Retreat, Ray of Enfeeblement Shield, Silent Image, Sleep; 2nd—Entangling Scarf (OA), Mirror Image, Resist Energy; 3rd—Clairaudience/Clairvoyance, Major Image; 4th—Phantasmal Killer.
Spirit’s Grace (Su): A Hu Xian adds her charisma modifier as a bonus to all saving throws, and as a deflection bonus to AC (already included in stat-block).
Skills: A Hu Xian gets a +2 racial bonus to Bluff and Disguise checks.
*They get a +10 bonus to disguise checks when polymorphed.

Hu Xian Characters
A Hu Xian’s favoured class is sorcerer. However a few do become bards or rogues.

Kitsune are usually described as being amoral (not immoral) but could be seen as defaulting to good as they serve Innari. Nogitsune, or Wild Foxes, do NOT serve Innari. They could default to evil. Depending on the story they may have any number of spell-like abilities, besides shapeshifting. Mainly enchantment/charm powers.

As an aside, the only time you will see a "pack" of foxes will be a family where the kits aren't quite ready to go it alone. Foxes are solitary hunters. The Grey Fox is the only one known to commonly climb trees, maybe a climb bonus if you want to break it down by Fox subtype. But if you stick to Vulpes Vulpes, then no climb bonus.

Good luck on making your Fox people.

The link given by me, two posts ago doesn't work, unless you copy and paste the text into your url-line.

If you had written it that way, it would work directly:

http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=3808

(The problem is with the "You are leaving" screen that suppresses everything from an '&' onward in an URL. If you have only one parameter in your URL, it is after a '?' and it poses no problems. But if you have several params, they will get the param separator, '&', and the "You are leaving" screen will believe these params are for itself, and remove them from the URL you are directed to.

Because a webaddy/page?param1=1&param2=2 link is transformed into a wizards/sodding-"you are leaving"-screen?where=webaddy/page?param1=1&param2=2.

So &param2=2 will be given to wizards/sodding-"you are leaving"-screen, and removed from the link you are directed to.

Fact is, most vB boards will clutter you with a totally useless first param of "s=" without giving a value to s. So s will get the default value, which it also gets when it is left out anyway. What's important is the threadid param.)

I tried a Werefox, but seeing as my DM and I couldn't really figure it out too well, it didn't turn out so well, but that's behind us both. I do like how you all are trying to get it. Chartreuse_Lotus and Silverfoxknows, yea, Kitsune do have supernatural abilities. There is a person that has focused on researching them, so by doing a google search for "Kitsune Lore" you'll find Foxtrot's page. Kitsune (Kyuubi-no-Kitsune for a full name) by nature are neutral, all do serve inari except the Nogitsune, but that does not always make them good. They're mostly neutral, with probably a slight tendency toward Chaos. They're naturally spirits, but take a mortal guise to experience emotions and feelings, since they can't normally. That's what I know off the top of my head.... if you can't tell by my name, I'm a fox-nut ^^. I hope I didn't intrude or cause any complications

Please don't derail my thread any further. The topic at hand is Foxes, WearFoxes, Anthropomorphic Foxes, and there stats in D&D.
Keenath

12-22-04, 09:47 AM
First, as I recall, you use the stats for a cat if you want a fox in your campaign -- for instance, if somebody wants a fox familiar.

If you want to extend that, you could use the anthropomorphic cat from Savage Species and simply declare that it is, in fact, a fox.

It tends to be best to simply modify existing things from the game and just switch the description. If you really need to make changes, make a little minor alteration. In the case of the fox, a cat is probably precisely what you want.

I assume for your anthro (non-were) character, you were intending to use the Savage Species 'anthropomorphic' template, right?
Gez

12-22-04, 10:30 AM
The cat stats are good for a Tiny fox. But there are larger foxes that deserve to be Small sized. AFAIK, all the fox stats WotC published were for foxes at least size Small, none for size Tiny.

Myself once used a fox as familiar and a future were changing of a character, wich was the fox`s master. For it i used a wolf as base creature, changing the Str bonuses to Dex bonus (since foxes are lighter built and not as strong..). FOr me and my group that worked based on the fact that most canidae are alike, with minor adjustments.. I must get the cheet from the DM to take a look but i recall removing the trip special attack..
Since Savage Species, Anthro characters have a template just like weres, so any kind of fox is possible.. :D Though for anthros i`m working on a bunch myself, for ecl +0 or +1.. the template have a wide range of ecl i find could be avoided.. but that`s my just the humble barking of this wolf...

My congrats to the folks who listed stats for the werefox and hu hsien. They and the other weres are still among my favorite monsters in D&D, though I always did have problems with the 'required to be evil' bit. Why does a fox or even a wolf /have/ to be evil?
nox

I always did have problems with the 'required to be evil' bit. Why does a fox or even a wolf /have/ to be evil? I belive there's no reason (except perhaps that D&D-werewolves are based upon "christian" myths and that those myths had a pretty clear statement about their role in the world). However I like the idea of lycanthopes (at least cursed ones) as beeing evil:

1. I like the idea that power corrupts and lycanthrophy is kinda "power at your hands! do you want to use it"
2. A player and his character should be tempted by this power and afraid of the corruption and danger it brings(wether you use it voluntary or not).
3. Besides alignment there's no "mechanic" to represent corruption of the soul. However it works so why invent something else (even if I wouldn't use the one-check-instant-alignment-change as writtenn).

Common Lycanthropes
Name: Animal Form: Ability Modifiers: Alignment:
Werefox Any Fox Dex +8, Con +2 Chaotic

CREATING A LYCANTHROPE
“Lycanthrope” is a template that can be added to any humanoid or giant (referred to hereafter as the base creature). The lycanthrope template can be inherited (for natural lycanthropes) or acquired (for afflicted lycanthropes). Becoming a lycanthrope is very much like multiclassing as an animal and gaining the appropriate Hit Dice.
Size and Type: The base creature’s type does not change, but the creature gains the shapechanger subtype. The lycanthrope takes on the characteristics of some type of carnivorous or omnivorous creature of the animal type (referred to hereafter as the base animal).
This animal can be any predator, scavenger, or omnivore whose size is within one size category of the base creature’s size (Small, Medium, or Large for a Medium base creature). Lycanthropes can also adopt a hybrid shape that combines features of the base creature and the base animal. A lycanthrope’s hybrid form is the same size as the base animal or the base creature, whichever is larger. A lycanthrope uses either the base creature’s or the base animal’s statistics and special abilities in addition to those described here.
Hit Dice and Hit Points: Same as the base creature plus those of the base animal. To calculate total hit points, apply Constitution modifiers according to the score the lycanthrope has in each form.
Speed: Same as the base creature or base animal, depending on which form the lycanthrope is using. Hybrids use the base creature’s speed.
Armor Class: The base creature’s natural armor bonus increases by +2 in all forms. In hybrid form, the lycanthrope’s natural armor bonus is equal to the natural armor bonus of the base animal or the base creature, whichever is better.
Base Attack/Grapple: Add the base attack bonus for the base animal to the base attack bonus for the base creature. The lycanthrope’s grapple bonus uses its attack bonus and modifiers for Strength and size depending on the lycanthrope’s form.
Attacks: Same as the base creature or base animal, depending on which form the lycanthrope is using. A lycanthrope in hybrid form gains two claw attacks and a bite attack as natural weapons.
These weapons deal damage based on the hybrid form’s size. A hybrid may attack with a weapon and a bite, or may attack with its natural weapons. The bite attack of a hybrid is a secondary attack.
Hybrid Size Claw Bite
Small 1d3 1d4
Medium 1d4 1d6
Large 1d6 1d8
Huge 2d4 2d6
Damage: Same as the base creature or base animal, depending on which form the lycanthrope is in.
Special Attacks: A lycanthrope retains the special attacks of the base creature or base animal, depending on which form it is using, and also gains the special attacks described below.
A lycanthrope’s hybrid form does not gain any special attacks of the base animal. A lycanthrope spellcaster cannot cast spells with verbal, somatic, or material components while in animal form, or spells with verbal components while in hybrid form.
Curse of Lycanthropy (Su): Any humanoid or giant hit by a natural lycanthrope’s bite attack in animal or hybrid form must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or contract lycanthropy. If the victim’s size is not within one size category of the lycanthrope the victim cannot contract lycanthropy from that lycanthrope. Afflicted lycanthropes cannot pass on the curse of lycanthropy.
Special Qualities: A lycanthrope retains all the special qualities of the base creature and the base animal, and also gains those described below.
Alternate Form (Su): A lycanthrope can shift into animal form as though using the polymorph spell on itself, though its gear is not affected, it does not regain hit points for changing form, and only the specific animal form indicated for the lycanthrope can be assumed. It does not assume the ability scores of the animal, but instead adds the animal’s physical ability score modifiers to its own ability scores. A lycanthrope also can assume a bipedal hybrid form with prehensile hands and animalistic features.
Changing to or from animal or hybrid form is a standard action.
A slain lycanthrope reverts to its humanoid form, although it remains dead. Separated body parts retain their animal form, however.
Afflicted lycanthropes find this ability difficult to control (see Lycanthropy as an Affliction, below), but natural lycanthropes have full control over this power.
Damage Reduction (Ex): An afflicted lycanthrope in animal or hybrid form has damage reduction 5/silver. A natural lycanthrope in animal or hybrid form has damage reduction 10/silver.
Lycanthropic Empathy (Ex): In any form, lycanthropes can communicate and empathize with normal or dire animals of their animal form. This gives them a +4 racial bonus on checks when influencing the animal’s attitude and allows the communication of simple concepts and (if the animal is friendly) commands, such as “friend,” “foe,” “flee,” and “attack.”
Low-Light Vision (Ex): A lycanthrope has low-light vision in any form.
Scent (Ex): A lycanthrope has the scent ability in any form.
Base Save Bonuses: Add the base save bonuses of the base animal to the base save bonuses of the base creature.
Abilities: All lycanthropes gain +2 to Wisdom. In addition, when in animal form, a lycanthrope’s physical ability scores improve according to its kind, as set out in the table below. These adjustments are equal to the animal’s normal ability scores –10 or –11. A lycanthrope in hybrid form modifies its physical ability scores by the same amount. In addition, a lycanthrope may also gain an additional ability score increase by virtue of its extra Hit Dice.
Skills: A lycanthrope gains skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die of its animal form, as if it had multiclassed into the animal type. (Animal is never its first Hit Die, though, and it does not gain quadruple skill points for any animal Hit Die.) Any skill given in the animal’s description is a class skill for the lycanthrope’s animal levels. In any form, a lycanthrope also has any racial skill bonuses of the base creature and of the base animal, although conditional skill bonuses only apply in the associated form.
Feats: Add the base animal’s feats to the base creature’s. If this results in a lycanthrope having the same feat twice, the lycanthrope gains no additional benefit unless the feat normally can be taken more once, in which case the duplicated feat works as noted in the feat description. This process may give the lycanthrope more feats than a character of its total Hit Dice would normally be entitled to; if this occurs, any “extra” feats are denoted as bonus feats. It’s possible that a lycanthrope cannot meet the prerequisites for all its feats when in humanoid form. If this occurs, the lycanthrope still has the feats, but cannot use them when in humanoid form. A lycanthrope receives Iron Will as a bonus feat.
Advancement: By character class.
Level Adjustment: Same as the base creature +2 (afflicted) or +3 (natural). In addition, a lycanthrope’s character level is increased by the number of racial Hit Dice the base animal has.

Use the template, use the modified stats I presented and you should come away happy. I think those stats are appropriate for a spry little fox and using this should make using a werefox a lot easier.
