| bielmic06-04-05, 03:47 AM | Hey guys and gals, I'm playing a mage with access to polymorph who is tired of casting fly after morphing. can anyone save me a step and a spell? anyone know of a large flying humanoid shaped (so i don't lose the normal equipement) creature from any of the books? obviously, a high natural ac bonus, strength, and reach (hence the large stipulation above) are big pluses too! |
| Derren S.06-04-05, 04:05 AM | Large is problematic. Various angels, demons and devils would fit, but you can't polymorph into them. Your best bet is probably combining spells like polymorph into giant + fly. |
| UZI06-04-05, 07:32 AM | Gargoyles become large at 7HD. |
| Slagger the Chuul06-04-05, 08:31 AM | You can't assume templated forms, and the physical qualities of the form you assume can't be beyond the normal for the race. Extra HD are probably covered by the latter. That aside, I've found 2 candidates in the 3.5 D&D books (the non-campaign setting ones, anyway), both from the Draconomicon. The dragonkin is a Large Monstrous Humanoid with 7 HD and a fly speed of 40 feet with good maneuverability. The dragonnel is a Large Dragon with 6 HD and a fly speed of 90 feet with average maneuverability. The Vermin Lord from the Monster Manual III also meets the criteria, but its flight isn't that great (30 ft., average), and its 25 HD put it beyond the reach of a polymorph spell. |
| BlackHeart97306-04-05, 10:07 AM | ummm you could use a Soldier Abeil(bee people, mm2) |
| UZI06-04-05, 11:14 AM | A large 7HD gargoyle is within the norms for a gargoyle. A 20' tall 7HD gargoyle is outside the norms for a gargoyle, as would any gargoyle (except for a juvenile?) weighing only 20 lbs. |
| bielmic06-04-05, 01:09 PM | wow, that was a quick response! i'd thought of the HD advancement for regular creatures but i don't think the DM would go for that (also the abeil may be a little too weird for him). he's pretty low key and fair but doesn't like introducing too many unknowns into the game. i do like the dragonkin idea: flight, good natural ac, large size with reach, and strength 19... by george, i think we've got it! basically, i was just trying to cut down on the number of turns/spells that the mage needed to buff himself before dealing some hurt in the game. i think we'll be down to one turn before the fireball goes off now! :) |
| ArconnTheAncient06-04-05, 08:51 PM | Half-Fiend Doppleganger would be medium size stick with this size or, if necessary, use a spell to enlarge |
| Vanigo06-04-05, 09:24 PM | You can't do a templated creature. |
| Jayr06-06-05, 08:20 PM | According to Skip William's rules clarification articles, you're not allowed to polymorph into a creature with advanced hit dice, class levels, or a template. Sorry, UZI, but only 4 HD gargoyles allowed. |
| Ogre4Hire06-06-05, 09:34 PM | Gargoyles and Harpies are the only two basically humanoid creatures from the MM that can fly and are legal for a humanoid to Polymorph into, and both of them are medium. |
