| shwack05-21-04, 03:17 PM | Good afternoon, in the campaign i'm running my epic level players are romping through the underdark and I get the impression they're tired of playing with the drow whose city they're approaching. As a change of pace I was thinking of having them run accross they lair of a minion of Lolth and the arachnoid creature template from the Forgotten Realms Underdark supplement jumped out at me. Does anyone have any suggestions for what would be a particularly appropriate base creature to use? I'm looking for a final CR of 24-26. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd apprecaite it. |
| Chachi05-22-04, 11:50 AM | I'm not sure if anyone's converted the Draegloth from the 3.0 Monsters of Faerun book (is in SRD? Yes, no, maybe so?), but slapping the Arachnoid template on one (raising its CR to 6) and giving it 20 cleric levels should make it quite a terrifying beastie indeed. If you want a page reference, the critter's on page 59 of MoF. |
| shwack05-25-04, 06:07 PM | I was hoping for somthing more bestial. The sort of thing that would live several days travel from a drow city and fill its cavern with spider webs to catch prey. Maybe an arachnoid, monster of legend, advanced hook horror, but I haven't delved into the specifics yet. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what sorts of creatures work particularly well with the arachnoid template and what might be reasonably lolth themed. I don't think a gaint spider would threaten the party significantly so I have to come up with somthing more exotic. |
| Incenjucar05-25-04, 06:17 PM | Perhaps combine it with some sort of flightless draconic creature? The CR is going to be a bit hard to hit, otherwise.. most dangerous creatures of that level are either intelligent, utterly massive to the point of being unable to survive in the underdark's limited foodstuffs, or constructed. |
| shwack06-01-04, 04:32 PM | Unless somthing better occurs to me, I think I'll take a nightmare beast from the mm2, advance it to 30 hd, add the arachnoid template, add the monster of legend template, and maybe a few (2-4) class levels. |

| Flame_Drake06-01-04, 11:59 PM | You could also start throwing Illithids at them later, that's always fun (just add the lich template and watch 'em scream) |
| Oakspar7777706-02-04, 01:27 PM | phase spider groups can be nasty, since they can swarm the party without giving an opportunity for an area spell to wipe them out, toss on half fiendish for extra smack. Tiny spiders hiding everywhere will be hard to spot. Jack them up with the half fiendish template, and boost their poison DC to something threatening. Your main beastie should be fiendish (to explain all the half fiends), huge spider paragon. (possibly with an elemental type as well). The trick to challenging players at that level is not to give them time to rest. A huge spider pit, with only minor scirmishes until they get to the bottom is great, then, once they are down there, swarm them with near endless swarms of spiders, jumping, phasing, throwing webbing, etc. Overwhelm quickly, so that they have to keep burning their best spells. Hit them with the big mother right when they are about to consider withdrawing. That way they have to descide whether to kill off the "boss" or running away in saftey. |
