I was wondering if it's possible for an aranea with class levels to become a lich. It can't use the standard template due to being a magical beast instead of humanoid, but they do have humanoid forms. Does this qualify them as humanoids for this purpose?

Just out of my head I'd say that doesn't qualify them to become liches.

However the concept is freaking cool and I'd just go ahead and run with it! Heck! Do you mind if I borrow it? Sounds like an awesome inspiration for an abnormal antagonist!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But some member's of my group are rule *****s so I want to be as careful as I can when breaking them.

Everybody breaks rules when they want to.. Dungeon Magazine had a Spellweaver Lich in one of their adventures last year, which is also not technically correct :)

I do not see anything mechanically game breaking about this particular combination. Go ahead by all means if it suits your game.:)

Or just gloss over that part, and create a lich template variant which is identical to the original lich template in all aspects but can be applied to the areana or something...:D

Well the Alhoon, or Mindflayer Lich, starts from an abberation instead of a humanoid.

Template limitations are just suggestions, anyway. As the DM, feel free to disregard it.

And the Rule Lawyers will simply have to accept that fact.
