| AngellicArcon01-12-07, 01:59 AM | Ok, so I have a situation in a mid-level game. I've got a player with an arcane ooze guarding his tower. A spellweaver arrives, seeking the wizards unique magical items. The weaver is protected by an Otiluke's Telekinetic sphere. Question #1 : Can the Ooze bypass the sphere's protection and attack the weaver? Question #2: Will the weaver be effected by the Arcane Ooze's syphon ability if protected by the sphere? Two very good questions yes? Please advise. (And thanks in advance..) |

Actually doesn't it list that under the spell description for Otiluke's Resilient and Telekinetic Sphere that spell resistance is a yes? Thats what I was basing the fact that the ooze could simply pass through it like it wasn't there.. :) |

If the spellweaver had cast the Telekinetic Sphere on the ooze, then the ooze would get a reflex save, and SR would apply. Since the sphere is already active on the weaver, the ooze gets no save or SR. It may be easier to think of it this way: Telekinetic Sphere creates a Wall of Force that happens to be in a spherical shape, surrounding a target. Anything that can't get through a Wall of Force, can't get through a Telekinetic Sphere. Do note, however, that even if the ooze was capable of passing through the sphere, its Siphon ability still would not affect the Spellweaver. Siphon requires line of effect to use, and Telekinetic Sphere blocks line of effect. The ooze would have to be inside the sphere with the weaver to Siphon its spells. |

The issue in question is a unique ability of the Arcane ooze namely: Immunity to Magic (Ex): An arcane ooze is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance. With this wording I am struggling to know if by "immune" it would be able to bypass an existing spell effect that allows spell resistance via its spell discription. This IS NOT a question about the spell resistance of the Arcane Ooze, but rather this unique ability of the creature. Further, I agree with you concerning line of effect. Hope not to come across harsh, and I do appreciate the feedback. |

Since an Arcane Ooze would interact normally with a Wall of Force or Forcecage, I can see no reason why Telekinetic Sphere would be any different. The thing to remember is that the Immunity to Magic ability means that the ooze has unbeatable SR against all spells. (Or at least, this was the ruling on the ability of the same name possessed by golems.) If a normal creature with SR can't avoid the effects, an Arcane Ooze can't either. As another example, take Resist Energy. Yes, it does allow SR; however, it still protects fully against an Arcane Ooze's acid. The SR only comes into the equation if the creature receiving the Resist Energy spell for some reason does not wish to be affected by the spell. |

Thanks for the great feedback on this. After doing more research I have found a great answer here. I agree with you on all counts. |
