04-13-05, 10:49 AM What kind of LA would you think the Archon traits would grant on their own?

Hound Archons have +5 LA, and that's the Archon traits along with Shape Change, spell resistance, Scent, +9 natural armor, 6 HD, and ability adjustments of +4,+2,+2,+2.

Trumpet Archons are +8 with the addition of spell resistance, +14 natural armor, 12 HD, a trumpet, ability adj(as far as i can tell) of +10, +6, +12, +6 , +6, +6, (or perhaps it's +6, +4, +8, +8, +4, +6; using the elite array?) and divine spells as a 14th level cleric.

Energy Resistance 10 to acid, fire, and cold (I think)
Greater teleport as a supernatural ability at will
An always active tongues ability as a spell-like ability.
Aura of Menace

This is pretty hard to judge, but all in all I'd say by itself it would reasonably be la + 3 after you throw in a substantial number of HD along with that. By itself, it would be somewhere around the range of + 5-7.

well, which is it? +3 or +5-7? Maybe i'm misreading something.

Well, unless I have a strange understanding of the rules, racial HD are NOT part of the LA, but must be ADDED to the LA and any class-cevels in order to get the effective class level. So, a 1st-level hound archon would be ECL 12.

I think ShinQuickMan wanted to say, that if you use it as a template (not granting extra-HD), the LA would be +5-7. If you use it together with some extra-HD, lessen the LA to +3 (because you have to take some racial HD that will also raise your ECL, and are generally much weaker than class levels).

I believe you're thinking of Hound Archons. The Hound and Trumpet Archons are the only ones in Savage Species(as far as i can find).

Immunity to electricity: at least +2
Two ranged touch attack that ignore DR of any type: +1

That's already a total of +5, which seems appropriate enough. I wouldn't settle for anything less, anyway. The fact that you can't use equipment may seem like a huge drawback, but then I can't imagine a lantern Archon PC without the Vow of Poverty feat.
