Hags reproduce by turning themselves into beautiful young women (via change self) and seducing humanoid men. The children from such a union are hags if female, and hulking hagspawn if male.

What The_Fan said, he nailed it on the head.

And the hag's outer planar counterparts, Night Hags don't reproduce really in the conventional sense as far as I'm aware. In fact their own relationship to larvae and the Hordlings of the Gray Waste is an open question. Some think that Night Hags are simply a final interation of the Hordling life cycle, others dispute that. The Hags don't spring directly from the plane though because the Yugoloths already fill that role with a subdued but undenied mastery of the Waste.

Keep in mind that this is Realmslore (I think), based on information from Unapproachable East. If you're not running a FR game, or don't like it, then get rid of it. In my FR game, the hags don't bother changing into something beautiful and young :P

To the OP: Try doing a forum search sometime. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=134619)

In my opinion they either trick and seduce a male, or they rape him. That's how they generally reproduce, same thing applies to harpies and other such races.

Well, they do spend a lot of time with Ogres... and Ogres seem to at least tolerate hags, if they don't like them. I would say those are viable mates, but the whole Change Self is pretty solid. Man, that would be a horrible morning after.

Well *pre* 3.5, Hags were actually considered to be giants, so the ogre thing makes perfect sense.

In 3.0 they were not giants, they were monstrous humanoids.

Some hags can also turn females of various races into hags by means of a dark ritual.

And eventually talking to our cows..

But back on subject: if you own a copy of the Sword and Sorcery Creature Collection, it says hags make one another by metamorphing beautiful women into hags.. Occasionally a woman may be so full of hate she becomes one by herself though..

I like the hag pictures from the creature collection :D!

Well, Im no expert of Hags mating, and it seems that there are some books that give an official version. So, we so far have these theories:

1.- Hags use their magics abilities to become beautiful females of the appropiate race to mate and reproduce. Males born from these unnatural unions are hulking Hagspawn and females are Hags themselves.

2.- Hags do mate with other species, but do not always bother to make it so "pleasant" as to polymorph themselves into the same species. They take what they want by force if necessary...Now that's a scary approach.

3.- Hags usually mate with giants, more often, ogres. Some of them are willing, and seem to either like the hags or at least tolerate them. It could be that they fear the hags so much as to willingly mate with them, becoming more slaves than bodyguards. Then again, maybe the devil made them do it.

4.- Hags are born of the hate that their race has towards beautiful women. In their hatred and envy, they polymorph the poor woman into one of themselves. The shock of the experience drives some of them mad, becoming a Hag both in looks and in heart.

5.- This hasn't been said yet but it could be considered. Why couldn't be males of some predominantly female mounstrous races? There could be male Hags and Harpies, and the fact that the females are more prominently displayed and known could mean that the males of the species are weaker, smaller and/or dumber, servants of the more capable females. I personally could easily conceive a male hags as a small, weak and pathetic creature, goblin like and wrinkled, with few powers beyond those allowing him to survive. They could be mainly used for less desirable chores, such as homekeeping and animal herding, or could simply be used merely for reproduction, with powerful hags keeping several of his "favorites" prisoner for "fun-times" now and then. Disturbing, but possible.

Then, after all, what makes D&D so great is that you can pick any of the former and use it in your world. :D

I have always used "Ecology of the Greenhag" by Nigel Findley in DRAGON #125, as my inspiration for hags. In the article, a greenhag is described as the daughter of a night hag and human, while an annis is the daughter of a greenhag and ogre/hill giant. In 1995, I took it a step further in my "Into the Land of Black Ice" (LoBI) PbP by deciding that succubi were the daughters of demons and night hags, while erinyes were the daughters of night hags and devils. Later, I decided that sea hags were the daughters of greenhags and merrow (aquatic ogres).

Of course, a detailed Night Hag Family Tree followed. I am working on a new revision, now, but here's one branch of an older version http://www.lobi.com/gallery/nhft15/FrameSet.htm

My current campaign, "Beneath the Pinnacles of Azor'alq" (BPAA) revolves around the machinations of hags. The protagonist, Xaetra, is a neutrally-aligned spectral hag who originated back in the LoBI campaign. The antagonist is a sea hag demi-lich who rules over four coveys. I added lesser coveys known as clutches and epic coveys known as covyns, for good measure. There are also half-hags, the hagtouched, and a handful of hag-specific PrCs to round things out.

The current party roster includes an oceanid (daughter of a salt hag and triton), A fine damselfish hivemind (swarm, aquatic) created from a hag's eye talisman, and a human altered with grafts from the now-extinct pseudonatural fish hag.

You can read more about the hags in my undersea campaign by selecting "Background" in the link in my signature, below.

Again, I'm not sure about this.

You're right.

I think orogs appeared in 2e AD&D, which I more or less skipped, or in a supplement for a setting other that Greyhawk, the only world I purchase materials for. The 1e AD&D Fiend Folio described ogrillons as simply an "orc-ogre crossbreed".

Note that the whole Orog racer has been changed in 3.5e.

In previous editions they were indeed orc-ogre crossbreed. Now (since Races of Faerun) the are a race of "super orcs" who changed due to living in the Underdark for too long.
