| Critical Mass08-26-05, 02:45 AM | I have a character coming up who had a fey in his ancestry and will be getting the half-fey template. However, the typical fey (pixies, dryads, nymphs, etc) all seem, well, pretty lame to me. This guy's gonna be an ass-kicking monk, and the image of him running around with butterfly wings and the like just doesn't fit the way I'm picturing him. I know there's some pretty cool fey out there, but I won't have access to my books for a while now; what are some examples of some cool/strong/combat-focused fey that I could use? Alignment isn't really too big of a factor. |
| malrick08-26-05, 06:57 AM | redcap is in mm 3, i didnt read it was looking for something else at the time. if they wrote them right they should be fey |
| The Vorpal Tribble08-26-05, 08:22 AM | Redcaps are blood-thirsty evils though. There is actually a fey of the spirit of battle from the Monster Manual III though, one that continuously has weapons flying around it and everything. Called the Ragewalker. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mmiii_gallery/83038.jpg Also could look up the Vodyanoi from Frostburn. Bout as bad tempered as they are ugly but not quite evil: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/fb_gallery/83580.jpg |
| babysamurai08-26-05, 09:12 AM | Satyr is an all time classic (horny and violent). |
| The Vorpal Tribble08-26-05, 09:36 AM | Oh, and then theres the Bacchus. Those human revelers turned fey. That sounds like it'd be a good match. |
| RavenoftheCrags08-26-05, 10:34 AM | Oh come on, just look at the grig from mm1 if you want cool. An angry little beetle guy is so stylish in any campaign. Give it another 20 hit dice, thats cool. |
| babysamurai08-26-05, 11:03 AM | Oh come on, just look at the grig from mm1 if you want cool. An angry little beetle guy is so stylish in any campaign. Give it another 20 hit dice, thats cool. Totally, a 20th level Grig Ranger rocks the free world. |
| DeciusNero08-26-05, 11:12 AM | Wendigos- essentially, fey-flavored lycanthropy. there's kelpies form Fiend Folio all of the above are evil. Glaistigs are CN, but unless you're character is female and you want white goat legs.... |
| The Vorpal Tribble08-26-05, 11:35 AM | How would a grig ever be able to mate with a human? I mean really. At least dragons assume human form and I don't even want to think about the ways you get those half far-realm types. Edit: I suppose maybe a halfling and a grig, though still thats stretching it. |

Have you ever heard of Ron Jeremy? |
| The Vorpal Tribble08-26-05, 12:09 PM | Uh... no? |
| Gilean08-26-05, 12:38 PM | Read a series of books by Tad Williams, it was something about three swords IIRC. There be cool fey in them for you. I have stolen (part of) their description for pretty much each world I use, as elves. Elves are fey, damn it. |
| Kothardarastrix08-26-05, 01:41 PM | IMO, Those cute little wussies are meant to be stepped on, for I am Lawful Evil! :evillaugh |
| Radijs08-26-05, 02:35 PM | Thorns (MM3) are pretty cool too in my opinion. |
| Randvek08-26-05, 02:49 PM | Satyr is an all time classic (horny and violent). I second the Satyr. A Satyr or even just having one in the bloodline would make an... interesting Monk, to say the least. |
| Kintara08-26-05, 03:22 PM | Thorns (MM3) are pretty cool too in my opinion. Yup. That's my suggestion. |
| Melpomene08-26-05, 04:20 PM | There's also the Killoren from the RotW, who are one of the more "PC friendly" fae races. |
| BlueLikeYou08-26-05, 05:04 PM | Theres always the Siabrie, which is a desert fey. They appeared in the old "far corners of the world" article series. http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/fw/20020817a I can't remember if they were ever published in a book, but I always thought they were pretty cool. They are very powerful fey (CR 18) with some neat abilities :) |
| Ouranos Harpy08-26-05, 06:26 PM | Can I ask a question? Exactly what characteristics must a creature be inorder to qualify as a 'Fey'? |
| The Vorpal Tribble08-26-05, 07:17 PM | Fey Type: A fey is a creature with supernatural abilities and connections to nature or to some other force or place. Fey are usually human-shaped. Features: A fey has the following features. * 6-sided Hit Dice. * Base attack bonus equal to 1/2 total Hit Dice (as wizard). * Good Reflex and Will saves. * Skill points equal to (6 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die. Traits: A fey possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). * Low-light vision. * Proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry. * Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) that it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Fey not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Fey are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor. * Fey eat, sleep, and breathe. |

| Melpomene08-26-05, 08:36 PM | Can I ask a question? Exactly what characteristics must a creature be inorder to qualify as a 'Fey'? A fey is a being who has bargained their soul to a power outside of the Wheel, in order to maintain life (or semblance of life). For example, an elemental which is about to die cannot stand the thought of recombining with the primal fire on the plane, and thus undergoes a special rite of transformation. The process transforms them into a ragewalker, and allows them to continue to live, but they are now outside of the natural order, and must perform special rituals (commanding living spells, raging) in order to stay alive. |
| Tevish Szat08-26-05, 09:41 PM | A fey is a being who has bargained their soul to a power outside of the Wheel, in order to maintain life (or semblance of life). For example, an elemental which is about to die cannot stand the thought of recombining with the primal fire on the plane, and thus undergoes a special rite of transformation. The process transforms them into a ragewalker, and allows them to continue to live, but they are now outside of the natural order, and must perform special rituals (commanding living spells, raging) in order to stay alive. that one is news to me. quite inventive, but isn;t that typically the opposite of what fey are oft seen as (nature spirits). IMHO, fey are to the Prime Material plane what Elementals are to the inner planes and Expemplars are to the Outer Planes. of course, we all have out own ideas. I must say that Is rather inventive... |
| Melpomene08-26-05, 10:06 PM | They have to be nature-spirits and tied to the land in order to pretend like they still care about the wheel. All of this information comes from the (diffinately not-core) Complete Guide to Fey. |
| Myst_the_Moonscout08-30-05, 01:18 AM | I like to go with the dictionary definitions myself, woodsy is a common theme but they don't need to be that way. Dictionary.com "fey" 1. Having or displaying an otherworldly, magical, or fairylike aspect or quality. Having visionary power; clairvoyant. Appearing touched or crazy, as if under a spell. Melpomene, that sounds like definition number two: 2. Scots. Fated to die soon. Full of the sense of approaching death. Critical Mass: you could always dig up the old Fey Feature articles in the wizards archives and have a look there. I for one cast another vote for the satyr. I have a half satyr bard/fighter character that I rather like. Doesn't sound impressive I know, but it's pretty funny when the pretty-boy bard walks up to an obnoxious thug in a bar and K.O.s him with a head butt. (My DM ruled that because I had horns, I had to have a head butt too). |
| Yak of Darkness08-30-05, 01:25 AM | I second the Satyr. A Satyr or even just having one in the bloodline would make an... interesting Monk, to say the least. Just begging to take the Drunken Master PrC. I mean, really, it would be a crime not to, and any DM with a player holding out on doing it should give them an XP penalty. ^_~ Alternative idea, but just as fun (although in a different direction). Nymph. Although I would disagree with the OP's assessment of fey like pixies as lame. Constant invisibility is good for anyone, but if you take the TWF tree (and you will have the Dex) and a few rogue levels . . . damn, just damn. In fact, take pixie as your race, the Ascetic Rogue feat from CV, and multiclass monk and rogue while stacking TWF and flurry of blows. Just make sure you buy a bunch of extra d6s before your game, because you will be rolling dem bones. |
| ksbsnowowl08-30-05, 02:12 AM | There are several nifty fey in the Fiend Folio. The Fossergim gets True Strike on every attack, as long as he's in his stream (they're connected to waterfalls sort of the way Dryads are connected to trees.) http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ff_gallery/50093.jpg Oreads get awesome spell like abilities (Earthquake for one...) http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ff_gallery/50097.jpg Shadar-Kai get some rather interesting shadow-related powers (and racial proficiency in the spiked chain) http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ff_gallery/50110.jpg |
| VampiricBloodlustNemesis08-30-05, 05:26 PM | Thorns, Wendigo,Leshay,Satyrs, and Shadar-Ki are the sweetest! :D |

Its overall shape is humanoid, except it is emaciated nearly to the point of being skeletal. Its skin has a mottled brown and green hue, and it almost looks like tree bark in texture. Its long arms each end in three-fingered hands tipped with long, curved talons with cruel serrations along the inner curve. Yet the menace's head is perhaps the most disturbing. Roughly human-shaped, its face is that of a handsome elven man, except that the eyes and mouth are cold, dark gashes that flicker with tiny motes of light, like stars in the night sky. Stories where sinister humanoid shapes flit through the depths of supposedly haunted woods are strangely common in some parts of the world. Sightings of murderjacks may inspire the majority of these stories. A murderjack is a cruel, capricious, and always sadistic fey that dwells in heavily forested areas. They are quite intelligent, and they often group together in tightly knit groups that hunt in packs. A group of murderjacks usually seeks out a solitary individual and uses the frightful presence ability to drive the victim deep into the forest where it becomes lost. The murderjacks then spend several days tormenting the poor soul, racing in to cut and slash at him until bleeding lacerations cover the victim's body. Eventually, when the victim collapses from fatigue, the murderjacks approach and cure his wounds, only to repeat the torment anew upon his waking. Only when the victim seems about ready to take his own life or escape do the murderjacks swarm, tearing the poor soul limb from limb and draping the red ribbons that remain over the trees for miles around. A murderjack is 7 feet tall but weighs only 100 pounds. Murderjacks speak Common and Sylvan. Combat The murderjack has no interest in fair fights. It prefers to use hit-and-run tactics over the course of several hours or even days, leaving its victim both horrified and fatigued. Only when murderjacks are confident that they outclass their victim, or they outnumber him, do they attack. When in a group, they work together to flank foes and keep them confused and disorganized with their spells and frightful presence. Frightning Presence (Su): When a murderjack charges or attacks, it inspires terror in all creatures within 30 feet that have fewer Hit Dice or levels than it has. Each potentially affected opponent must succeed at a DC 23 Will save or become panicked. Creatures with equal or more Hit Dice become shaken only on a failed save. If a victim (whatever its Hit Dice) is caught in the range of three or more murderjacks and fails to resist at least three of their frightningpresence effects, she also suffers 1d4 points of Wisdom damage from the soul-numbing fear. This is a mind-affecting fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based. Spells: A murderjack can cast arcane spells as a 10th-level bard (3/5/5/3/1). A typical murderjack knows the following spells: 0 -- dancing lights, ghost sound, lullaby, mage hand, message, prestidigitation; 1st -- cure light wounds, expeditious retreat, sleep (DC 17), ventriloquism (DC 17); 2nd -- cat's grace, cure moderate wounds, detect thoughts (DC 18), hold person (DC 18); 3rd -- confusion (DC 19), cure serious wounds, deep slumber (DC 19), slow (DC 19); 4th -- dimension door, locate creature. Woodland Concealment (Su): In woodland areas, the murderjack's green and brown seems to blur and fade into the brackground. Attacks directed at the murderjack when it is in a woodland area suffer a 20% miss chance. Sudden Lunge (Su): Once per hour, a murderjack can move up to its speed as a free action. A murderjack often uses this ability to rush an opponent during the surprise round so it can make a sneak attack. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Teh Coolness. But, the Satyr Drunken Master would be cool ass well. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-30-05, 08:49 PM | You could try my squelvie (scroll down a bit) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=458069), although it's not as cool as it is alien. Almond eyes, flies with no visible means of doing so, long serpentine tail, clawed hands on triple-jointed arms, blood-sucking proboscis, etc. |
| Lionheart42908-31-05, 01:41 AM | YES to the murderjack. The whole time I was reading this, I'm thinking: why doesn't anyone mention murderjack.
