11-18-03, 07:46 PM i havent seen them before but you kinda have to have both genders otherwise there wouldint be any at all. unless they are created from evil old ladys that would make sense since i cant see anyone really be born old and wrinkled

11-18-03, 07:51 PM I have not seen anything on male hags ever. Good question. I think they are more an evil spirit and thus have no need to reproduce.

11-18-03, 08:02 PM I think in Unapprachable East had something about Hags and how the reproduce. Talked about that the find a human mate, willing or otherwise, and if the child is a girl it becomes hag, if its a male it becomes a half hag.

Not really. There are plenty of asexual creatures in the world, and D&D is no exception.

Noone has ever seen a Night Hag being born, though it is believed tha they arise spontaneously from the essence of the Grey wastes itself. How they can do this when Yugoloths are the true natives to the Wastes is unknown. But noone really knows if its true or not.

11-19-03, 03:24 AM I've read an article a long while back in a Dragon magazine (but not the US dragon, so don't scramble through your collection) about the ecology of hags.

Inspired by it (but a bit modified), here's what I use:

The model it proposed was that Green Hags were the offspring of Night Hags and human males. The conception wasn't really "standard", as the Night Hag magically haunted the dreams of the man, forcing him to do as she wishes during these dreams.

After this, the man's essence was tainted by the Night Hag. If he had sex with his wife (or another woman) without undergoing a cleansing ritual (or, in more technical terms, a remove curse) first, the child he would conceive would not be truly his own.

A little girl would be born, seemingly normal during her first seven years. A bit weird sometimes (think Wednesday Adams.) After that, on a fateful day, she would violently turns into a Green Hag and slay her "parents" during a fit of wrathful fury. After this metamorphosis and this carnage, the last shred of humanity inherited from her human mother would battle for some time against the Beast Within, but eventually fade.

Most other hag types (sea hag, annis hag, and for UE, bheur and shrieking) are the possible offspring of green hag.

The rest of the hags (brine, cave, ice, moon, storm, swamp; see Creature Collection) are a parrallel kind of hags. They are humanoid women who tries to become hags for whatever reason, and the recipes for this foul transformation have been developped by Night Hags.

The male child of a hag is always a hagspawn. Some hags tries to transform children, those who don't die become haglings (see Creature Collection 2).

After her death, the soul of a hag goes to the Gray Waste of Hades, where Night Hags identify it for what it is and hide it from soul-hungry fiends, until the larva matures into a Night Hag.

11-23-03, 09:54 AM In my campaigns, hags are viable with a number of other species. I took my cue from "The Ecology of the Greenhag", in a past issue of DRAGON. In that article, it detailed the greenhag as the daghter of a night hag and human, while the annis was the daughter of a greenhag and ogre or hill giant. Extrapolating from that, I decided that the succubi and erinyes were daughters of night hags, by demon and devil fathers respectively. Sea hags, I decided, were the daughters of greenhags and merrow (aquatic ogres).

Here's an example of one branch of the Night Hag Family Tree, as I see it. I am working on a current revision now, adding the asura as the daughter of a night hag and celestial.

While a night hag and nightfall may produce offspring, only a true hag may rise to the ranks of an epic midnight hag. Such hags are often formed from human stock, when a human female heretic is burned alive, drowned, or slain in a similar fashion.

11-24-03, 09:44 AM Read Van Richtten's guide to Hags (Ravenloft) the best works every written, there is a section on what people think is the thruth (legend, rumors, theories etc) that the players can read. Then there are the actual facts about the monster (for the DM eyes only)

Regular Hags mate with human males (Using the power of illusion to mask there appearence), the children born are often left abandoned (since the Hag usualy kills the male parent) on church steps, peoples homes etc.

The Children are normal except they show signs of there Hag mother, Annis become tom boys who prefer to fight than sew, green hags are beautiful in the first stage becoming artist or singner, sea hags look like common peasant girls.

in their human stage they can't concive children.

They all live normal lives (can even be good) but at around 40 years of age they notice they don't lack energy they suddenly feel strong, more powerfull than ever. Then over the next five years they become full hags.

If a Hag is killed but it's powerful enghou for it's spirt to remain it becomes a spirit hag. A Spirit hag in a blood moon ritual can transform a victim into a hag,

Annis spirit hags can transform humans and half-elf females in Annis hags, Green spirit hags can transform Half-elves and elves in Green spirit hags , sea hags can transform halflings in sea hags.

the only thing mentioned on nighthags is if a night hag enter the dream of a man. She rides him t'ill dawn and drains consitution points. If the hag isn't driven off the man becomes a Learva and form that form it can be sold to devil or demons or transformed in any lower plane creature.

The Devil are usualy Male gender(or gender neutral), but a few females have appeared in the ranks such as the Erinyes, but Devils can change their gender almost at will. The Devils tried conceiving with there own but realised the females (even the Erinyes were childless). Amadeus has his own devil daughter (leader of the Erinyes)

But the Devils can have children with mortals. Even Erinyes can become pregnant with a human. But Half-Devils make poor solgiers in the blood war. They prefer Laerva to turn into Lesser Devils.

The Tanar'ii can mate with any gender, and wider range of creatures (more chaotic that way), they can even breed withing their own ranks. Once the Tanar'ii are born they have the powers of full demons (so no childhood) they grow up quickly to join the ranks of the Tanar'ii.

if a Tanar'ii mates with a mortal, then the growing up period is like the mortal parent, and once puperty hits he gets his demon abilities.

There are no female hags. Hags do not reproduce with a human male. They find a femal adult, preferably of the original race they were, and use several different poisons and rituals that slowly strip away the creature's youth,beauty, and soul. THey then become hags of the type that created them. They ritual does not need to be willingfully undertaken by the subject. The new hag always views the creator as a grandma of sorts, but then leaves to start on her own. Sometimes, children of any sex are captured by hags. These are either killed and eaten, or turned into haglings, or child hags. Night hags are the same, but are a more powerful variation. I read somewhere that they can create any hag, and only willing and strong subjects are transformed into night hags.

This is from the Swords and Sorcery books, I know, but it is probably the best source book for explaining hags.

While I use hags in all of my campaigns, I never cared for the Creature Collection hags. I prefer hags with intricate and sordid family trees. Hags can polymorph into any number of pleasing forms, not unlike a dragon. There are all manner of half-dragons running amuck. Why not hag offspring as well?

For example, SS has a brine hag. Inspired by the Zuni figure Salt Old Woman, I created salt hags, daughters of night hags and sea elves. Their sylvan counterparts are the woodhags, offspring of night hags and sylvan elves. Carrying the generations forward, there is the oceanid, daughter of a salt hag and triton, and their half-siblings the salt creeps, fathered by aquatic daemons.

There is an oceanid monk PC in my undersea campaign. She is now part of a "clutch", a lesser covey sponsored by a hag.

In Hellbound The Blood War it says that no fiends can reproduce, but have to depend on mortals and mortal sould to refill their ranks.
