Are vampires and lycanthropes hostile in D&D? [Archive] - Wizards Community

01-18-07, 04:24 PM Over the past few (years? decades? centuries?) the notion has arisen in popular fantasy works like the World of Darkness RPGverse and Discworld that vampires and werewolves are implacable enemies.

Is it true in D&D? Is it true in your world in D&D? Or is it just not so?

Both creatures do tend to be hostile in D&D, just not to each other.

01-20-07, 11:04 AM Not unless the DM deems it so. They could be rivals or just as easily allies. A more powerful vampire could even have werewolf servants (a more powerful Children of the Night supernatural ability which could allow the vampire to command dire wolves or even werewolves in wolf form). On the other hand, a pack of werewolves could be dominating a weaker vampire, even a vampire spawn. The possibilites are endless.

Movies like UNDERWORLD and White Wolf's games pit vampires against werewolves but it is a fairly recent trope. Older movies and books sometimes present these creatures as allies. The 1944 movie THE RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE presents a vampire with a werewolf assistant. The movie VAN HELSING also had Dracula using werewolves to do his bidding. SANTO AND BLUE DEMON VS. DRACULA AND THE WOLF MAN (1972) also presented the vampire/werewolf alliance in a shlocky Mexican masked wrestler movie.

In the Laurel K. Hamilton Anita Blake books the vampires and werewolves are presented as romantic rivals. One only need to look at the relationship between Oz and Angel on the t.v. series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER to see the uneasy truce - each knows the other is a monster.
