Is there anything in the rules that would prevent someone from putting armor on a flesh golem?

Proficiency

Non-proficiency doesn't prevent you from using the armor, it only means you'll get the armor check penalty on attack rolls and all skill checks that involve moving, such as Ride.

And the armor check penalty is lowered for masterwork or mithral armor, so a flesh golem could wear leather, masterwork studded leather or a mithral chain shirt at no penalty. I guess there is nothing that prevents that.

Yeah, I know proficiency doesn't keep you from wearing it. But how often do you see anyone without proficiency wearing armor? Its easy enough to come by.

All the time. I see a lot of wizards with masterwork studded leather or mithral chain shirts.

Those don't seem like very good ideas, since they give arcane spell failure chances of 15% and 10% respectively.

However, I've yet to see a wizard without a mithral buckler. It leaves your hand free for somatic componants, and you can still hold a weapon in the other hand and keep threatening surrounding squares. Unless you really want to fight with a two-handed weapon, there's no reason not to do it.

How about crafting armor on to a flesh golem's body?

I don't think you can craft armor on a creature. And even if you could, there would still be an armor check penalty.

But just give your flesh golem a +2 mithral chain shirt. If you can't see the difference, truet me, your players will. This might even be worth a +1 to CR.

But would a creature with a high natural AC bonus, which represents the toughness of the creature's hide, really benefit from wearing studded leather armor? (A flesh golem has a +10 natural AC bonus and DR 5/adamantine.) In game mechanics perhaps it would, but it doesn't seem very logical.

The rules however, say you can do it.

uhmmm yes... why wouldn't it... added protection is still added protection, and the studded leather is just one more layer that needs to be penetrated.
