Odd thought: An Augmented creature (such as one with a template or a special creature like a wizard's familiar or paladin's warhorse) changes its type to whatever and gains the augmented subtype, paired with its original type.

So a half-dragon elf is a Dragon (augmented elf) and a wizard's familiar is a Magical Beast (Augmented ANimal)

Does the augmented subtype have any impact on gameplay? Is an augmented animal still vulnerable to, say, favored enemy damage if a ranger has Animals as a favored enemy? Is a humanoid with an inhereted template still subject to "target humanoid" spells?

If not, then why bother with the augmented subtype at all?

Just curious.

I think the point of it is just too make it obvious at a glance how the creature's base attack and base saves were calculated. For example, if you saw a celestial lion's stat block, but were unfamiliar with the celestial template, it would look like the base attack bonus was calculated incorrectly.

True...bhut wouldn't a celestial lion have the same anatomy and characteristics as a noramal lion?

Why shouldn't a ranger who can track and kill a lion be able to track and kill a celestial lion?

Your guess is as good as mine. It seems to me that allowing augmented subtypes to count for the ranger's favoured enemy would be a reasonable house rule.
