02-02-04, 02:17 PM the average HP are listed in the monster manual by the creature... to calculate the average hp of a new monster, or one with a different amount of HD then listed (say an advanced memeber of the species)... you take the the die's half way point (if the creature has d6 HD it is 3.5, d8 is 4.5, d10 is 5.5 and d12 is 6.5) and multiply it by the number of HD the creature possesses (rounding down if it ends in a decimal) and then adding any aplicable numbers (such as from constitution bonus or the toughness feat to that total.

for example a 10 HD dragon with a constitution of 19 has a HD that looks like 10d12+40

to get the average hp you multiply 6.5 x 10 and then add 40 (for a total of 105 average HP.
