ZDB 04-24-08, 10:21 AM	Hi! Im in need of help, could anyone post the stats of awakened black bear? The bear with the lowest CR from the MM. And wich will be his LA, if someone wants to use it as a character?
DebiHuman 04-24-08, 03:57 PM	Actually, this is one time when your Player should stat up his character. Awaken adds the following: An awakened animal gets 3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 HD. Its type becomes magical beast (augmented animal). An awakened animal can’t serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount. An awakened tree or animal can speak one language that you know, plus one additional language that you know per point of Intelligence bonus (if any). You can find the black bear here: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/bearBlack.htm I also checked the FAQ which had this to say: What are the Challenge Rating adjustment and level adjustment for an awakened animal? The rules don’t state such values, so it’s up to the DM to decide. Chapter 4 of the Monster Manual suggests that an animal should gain +1 to its Challenge Rating per 3 extra HD; since awaken adds 2 HD along with an Intelligence and Charisma boost, +1 seems like a reasonable value. Since most animals don’t have a level adjustment listed, calculating the effect of an awaken spell on LA is more complicated. Your best bet is to look at the final result and determine a level adjustment for that creature (rather than calculating separate level adjustments for the original animal and the awaken effect). Page 25 of Savage Species has advice on setting level adjustments. The rules do not state whether or not you recalculate the HD or whether it keeps its old hit die. Sadly that's frustrating but I would allow a PC Awakened Bear to use all d10s as HD since this is really starting from scratch. Not every DM will agree with me. [See my Edit below] 5d10+bonus from Con. Since creatures and PCs alike gain an extra ability point every 4 HD, and the bear is going from 3 HD to 5 HD, the player gets to assign that extra ability point any where he (or she) chooses. An awakended back bear also has +1 level adjustment. If this were an NPC Awakened bear, I wouldn't mind statting one up, but because a player wants to play it, your player should apply the new stats. BAB for Magical Beasts is like Fighter (1 per HD). It has Good Fortitude (1/2 HD +2 and Con modifer) and Good Reflex Saves (1/2 HD +2 plus Dex modifier) and Poor Will Save (Poor HD/3 plus Wisdom modifier). ***edit*** Most DMs will approve this build for Awakened Black bear. Awakened Black Bear Medium Magical Beast [Augmented Animal] Hit Dice: 5d8 + Con bonus ( hp) [You could allow player to roll this see stats below] Keep normal black bear stats for Str, Con, Dex & Wis , player rolls for (3d6) for Int and adds 1d3 to Cha.
