Ok, this has been bugging the crap out of me. I have a player who brought up the idea of having an awaken animal as some point on one of my games. I was kind of hesatent at first, but after looking in the Savage Species book, I kinda got hip to the idea. My question is, how in the WORLD do you handle that? Do you roll their stats like normal? How do you handle fractional HD and the increase from awakening? If anyone has come across this, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Roll the stats as normal, and apply the appropriate ability modifiers. (Determine the ability modifiers by subtracting 10 or 11 from the listed stats - whichever yields an even number.) The character starts with a number of racial hit dice equal to 2 + the number listed (round up, so a rat would start with 3d8 hit points).

Would you also subtract the negative results that you get from subtracting 10 or 11?

Yes. If a creature is listed as having, say, an Int score of 6, that means its racial modifier to Int is -4.

Of course, in the case of an awakened animal, you'll probably be determining its Intelligence score using the awaken spell, rather than from its natural Intelligence score of 1 or 2.

Thanks for the info guys. We've kinda got things set now. My next question would be, has anyone else had players run animals as PCs before? If so, how did you handle them?
