The horror. Imagine it, a Tarrasque with the ability to take levels in classes. A Tarrasque wizard!

Opinions?

Hope he rolls high on intelligence. He's given 3d6 rather than the normal point buy :D

So he has an average 10 intelligence, he's going to suck as a Wizard.

Of course, if he rolls low, he has 14 charisma. He can make a passable Sorcerer. If he gets to level 6 he's finally got Flight.

And don't forget the wealth he picks up from having class levels now...

I've posted it around before. As a semi-joke, I statted out a Tarrasque assassin 10 and mentioned to my players that if anyone does anything really stupid at the table they get to run into *him.* Usually the threat of "Fast Eddie" was enough to get my players in line. I think the stats are around here somewhere; he had a hide somewhere in the 60s and could cast wraithstrike 3/day.

The Level Adjustment would be horrid. The Tarrasque would never level. What would you be at CR 30? A level 10 Wizard or something? What would you be at ECL 100? A level 20 Wizard or something?

Not worth it. Just take a PHB race if you're going for caster levels. Or at least take a monstrous race that has innate caster levels that stack with the wizard, sorcerer, cleric, or psion classes. Mindflayers are a decent choice.

At Epic levels, that extra strength and HP will quickly become useless. Your allies will be angry that your Tarrasque sucks as a spellcaster (who won't be able to cast epic spells until way way late into the game) and can't help them augment their own Epic spells in ritual abuses.

And you'll be mad at yourself because your allies all have their own demi-planes and have become gods while you're struggling with your first magic missile.

EDIT: Honestly, if your DM allows awakened Tarrasques to be played as PCs or cohorts, you'd be better off asking if you could play a kobold manifester. Now THOSE have potential.

Yes, but it's far more scary, for example, facing a CR 25 Wizard (25 caster levels) than a CR 25 Tarrasque Wizard (5 caster levels).

At least I see it that way, because I tend to use casters quite abusively and brutally. No pulled punches.

How can one awaken the tarrasque?

I'm pretty sure that you can't, given that Tarrasque is a Magical Beast, and the spell only awakens trees and animals. But there's a spell in the PHB called Awaken that does it.

Fetch me my Level One Commoner Hammergun, boy!
(Not my idea!)
Enough commoners (about 2 billion, methinks), each readied to pass on the hammer, save those at the ends. The one at the back starts it going, and in one round it has reached the front of the line in 6 seconds, and the last guy lobs it (readied action) at the tarrasque. The maths does it, but the hammer kinds tends towards light speed. Damage reduction? pfft, what does it matter to, um... 16392851d6 damage? (rounded up from 1639285.9)

That's an average of 491 million bludgeoning damage, plus fire from the air igniting around the thing, and possible electrical from induction, if the hammer contains iron. Sadly, this is only legal RAW. Near-instantaneous action through readiness is not allowed because level 1 commoners cannot react at that speed... maybe wizards with timestop, though... wait a tick

This belongs on the magic boards, but I'm sure I could bend the rules to allow an item moved on a perfectly straight trajectory to have infinite velocity after the end of a time stop... ooh, doom!

The idea of a tarrasque warlock is one that some how strikes fear into the heart of people... I think its the idea of the Big T, coupled with flight, invisibility, dispel magics... But I must ask... How in the Abyss and Nine hells does entropic warding stop it being tracked?!?!? It's footprint is bigger than a man, and it cannot be tracked?!?

As to the speed of light, The intense speed melts the hammer, but fear not! The projected force of the light off the hammer, will...be a ray...oh dear...

I found it pretty easy to make the Tarrasque more beastly just by tweaking his feats.

He has:

Alertness, Awesome Blow, Blind-Fight, Cleave, Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Great Cleave, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Initiative, Iron Will, Power Attack, Toughness (6)

So, right off the bat, we strike: Alertness, Iron Will and all 6 Toughnesses.

We can swap in: Shock Trooper, Improved Toughness, Improved Natural Attack (all of 'em). and we still have 2 to play with.

Very true, simply expanding on the given feats can be so much more lethal, but we're not trying to make the tarrasque nastier, simply to figure out what would be the best class for it to strike terror into the hearts of PCs and NPCs everywhere!

I think a Psion (Seer) would still be scarier to spellcasters.

The Magical Community will only fear something if it can actually hunt them down (detect where they are) and prevent them from escaping at the drop of a hat, which currently no pure fighter-type Tarrasque can do.

Metafaculty and divert teleport work nicely for hunting spell-casters.

A tarrasque cannot hurt incorporeal creatures at all. They require weapons of at +1enhancement bonus to damage, and a tarrasque's natural weapons are only considered epic...

Note that not even the ability to overcome dr/magic will suffice, you need an actual +1enhancement bonus...;)

What would be associated class levels for a Tarasque, casting classes are probably non-associated which means 48 levels of whatever casting classes you want the thing to have before the CR crosses 44. Which means at CR 30 its got 20 levels in a caster class.

In 3.5, you need magic damage to hurt incorporeal creatures. Epic damage counts as magic damage for bypassing DR or incorporeality.

In 3.5, you need magic damage to hurt incorporeal creatures. Epic damage counts as magic damage for bypassing DR or incorporeality.
Where are you getting this from?
Epic is epic, magic is magic. Ability to overcome epic dr does not mean automatically being able to overcome dr/magic.

Plus, you might want to reread the entry on incorporeality. You need an actual +1 weapon to damage it, ability to overcome dr/magic alone(such as a 4th lv monk) is not enough. Yes, this means that a 4th lv monk without magic fang or a magic kama cannot hurt an incorporeal foe at all.;)

A tarrasque's natural weapons, however powerful you may make them out to be, ultimately still lack an actual +1enhancement bonus, and so cannot hurt the allip at all.;)

Dirty? yes. Should it be houseruled? Perhaps. But I believe my interpretation is every bit accurate as per the RAW.:)
Sapp

10-11-06, 12:05 AM
Here you go. This is where I got it from:
http://d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#incorporeality
Starting from incorporeality.

10-11-06, 12:23 AM
A tarrasque's natural weapons, however powerful you may make them out to be, ultimately still lack an actual +1enhancement bonus, and so cannot hurt the allip at all.;)That appears to be incorrect. From the rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/specialAbilities.htm#damageReduction):
"A few very powerful monsters are vulnerable only to epic weapons; that is, magic weapons with at least a +6 enhancement bonus. Such creatures’ natural weapons are also treated as epic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. "

Plus, you might want to reread the entry on incorporeality. You need an actual +1 weapon to damage it, ability to overcome dr/magic alone(such as a 4th lv monk) is not enough. Yes, this means that a 4th lv monk without magic fang or a magic kama cannot hurt an incorporeal foe at all..;)That is also incorrect (btw: are you possibly using a 3.0 book are something?)
runestar

10-11-06, 02:02 AM
Incorporeal creatures can be harmed only by other incorporeal creatures, by magic weapons, or by spells, spell-like effects, or supernatural effects. They are immune to all nonmagical attack forms. They are not burned by normal fires, affected by natural cold, or harmed by mundane acids.
I say again: ability to overcome dr/magic is not the same as actually wielding a magic weapon. For example, a 4th lv monk's unarmed strikes are treated as magic weapons for purposes of overcoming dr/magic only, it is not an actual magic weapon in the dnd terminology, and dr is simply not the same as actual incorporeality.:)

That is also incorrect (btw: are you possibly using a 3.0 book are something?)
It would help if you actually clarified on just which part of my statement you think is incorrect, rather than just make a blanket statement and leave me(and everyone else) guessing.:) Could you be more explicit? Thanks.:) FYI, I am basing everything off the SRD.
That appears to be incorrect. From the rules:
"A few very powerful monsters are vulnerable only to epic weapons; that is, magic weapons with at least a +6 enhancement bonus. Such creatures’ natural weapons are also treated as epic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. "
Again, you are confusing the ability to overcome dr of a certain sort for the actual magical property. A tarrasque's natural weapons are only treated as epic for overcoming dr, nothing more. Are you saying it should get +6 to hit/damage for the +6 enhancement bonus it supposedly has?
mvincent

10-11-06, 12:20 PM
a 4th lv monk's unarmed strikes are treated as magic weapons for purposes of overcoming dr/magic onlyAh. Got it. You are correct... the Sage appears to agree on that. From the 3.5 FAQ:
"Does the monk’s ki strike (magic) only allow her to
overcome damage reduction or does it make her natural
attacks count as magic weapons for all effects (such as
affecting incorporeal opponents)?
The Player’s Handbook states that ki strike affects the
monk’s unarmed strikes “for the purpose of dealing damage to
creatures with damage reduction,” but says nothing about any
other effects. Thus, the monk’s unarmed attacks aren’t
considered magic weapons for any other purpose, including
affecting incorporeal foes."

(I was also under the impression that you were implying that the Tarrasque could not bypass DR/magic, but I see now that is not what you were saying).

That was not what I was implying, but that too is true. The tarrasque cannot overcome any sort of dr except for dr/epic, which none of your players should possess, so that's really moot.

Dr/magic, dr/cold iron, dr/silver etc...they are all good against the tarrasque.:)

That was not what I was implying, but that too is true. The tarrasque cannot overcome any sort of dr except for dr/epicThat appears subject to interpretation, so I will again provide some leg-work:

1) The rule I quoted earlier implied that the DR/Epic is simply a more powerful form of DR/magic, and that weapons that bypass DR/epic would easily bypass DR/magic
2) The 3.0 Tarrasque (http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd/srdmonsterst.rtf) could bypass DR/+1 through DR/+5.
3) This is the same for a large number of other 3.0 monsters (and Deities) that now have epic damage resistance.
4) The renaming of the DR's not seem to be intended to break this precedence.
5) The Improved Ki Strike [Epic] (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#improvedKiStrike) feat reads: "Your unarmed strikes are treated as epic magic weapons for the purposes of damage reduction."

Do you have some material that supports the conclusion that attacks that bypass DR/epic cannot also bypass DR/magic?
runestar

10-11-06, 10:06 PM
Do you have some material that supports the conclusion that attacks that bypass DR/epic cannot also bypass DR/magic?
I think the better question is: what proof do you have that dr/epic can bypass dr/magic as well?
The tarrasque entry states that it can penetrate dr/epic, but no mention is made of dr/magic. It does not say that you can, so until you can prove otherwise, you can't.:P
You'd better reread the rules. Anything that overcomes DR/epic overcomes DR/magic.
And where is thus rule? I am not trying to call you people bluff, nor am I trying to be difficult here, but I honestly cannot find a ruling which states that dr/epic automatically bypasses dr/magic as well.

In the case of PCs with magic weapons, an epic weapon would obviously need to be a magic weapon by virtue of its +6 weapon enhancement bonus. There's no discrepancy there.

However, in the case of monsters whose natural weapons are only treated as such for purposes of overcoming dr, but lack the actual enhancement bonus, then the line blurs, don't you think.:)

What research do you need? I have already stated that the tarrasque's natural weapons lack an actual enhancement bonus, and it does not explicitly state that it overcomes dr/magic, so it shouldn't.
I also cannot find a definitive statement that natural weapons which can penetrate dr/epic automatically overcome dr/magic automatically simply by virtue of their being able to overcome dr/epic. If that poster could be so gracious to provide a link to the appropriate article and bring an end to this debate...:)

I have refuted your points, you just seem to have conveniently avoid them as though they never were.

5) The Improved Ki Strike [Epic] feat reads: "Your unarmed strikes are treated as epic magic weapons for the purposes of damage reduction."
Then pray tell me, why, if epic was counted as magic for purposes of overcoming reduction, said feat needed to emphasis that said attacks were "epic" and "magic", when simply "counts as epic for purposes of..." would suffice?;)

I think it's possible that at this point you are locked into your own POV and are having trouble viewing other people's viewpoint. That's fine... it often happens (for both sides of any debate), so there is nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree. Fine then - perhaps you could enlighten me as to why it states that a monk's fists are epic magic weapons, if, according to your rationale, epic alone would suffice?:)
I think it's possible that at this point you are locked into your own POV and are having trouble viewing other people's viewpoint.
I could say the same about you. If there was a fire raging outside, and I said there was a fire, and a hundred of you claimed there was no such fire, does that necessarily make me wrong?;)

If you want me to trust you, then you must give me a reason to trust. Believe me, I have tried to consider your stand, but the few points you have raised are just too weak to warrant any sort of justification.
That's fine... it often happens (for both sides of any debate)
False analogy. In a debate, both sides are out to win. It doesn't matter if I believe in the opposition's POV or not, if I am to be victorious, then I will have to persist in my own stand however ridiculous I perceive it to be.

This was never a debate. I don't see myself as some sort of rules guru, nor am I dumb enough to proclaim myself as one, since I know very well I still have a very long way to go towards mastering dnd rules. I engage in rules arguments in the interest of pitting my understanding of dnd against that of other people, so that I can learn something. However, the spirit of an argument is that you must supply relevant evidence to back your claims, else, it just remains a fallacy.

<re-reading> It doesn't appear that you spoke to any of my above points. Perhaps both of us are no longer communicating effectively on this topic.
I should have, but just in case, let me reiterate my stand.
I don't see the relevance of points 2, 3 and 4. What was once viable in 3.0 might no longer be true in 3.5. I have addressed point 5 above, and your quote for point 1 does not suggest anything remotely close to your claim at all.
If you do not trust us, I recommend asking another player whose opinion you trust, the Sage, or WotC customer service.
That could be a problem, since I tend to trust the solidity of a person's argument rather than the people themselves...

As for the Sage and cust service, I believe that if I email them the same question enough times, I should eventually be able to get the answer I want, even if that is incorrect....:P

People people, I think we are forgetting the most important thing here.
Make the terrasque a cleric, then work his way towards Demi-Lich.

Do the ploymorph/awaken thing.

Have him take class levels in monk. Give him a Greater Monks Belt.

Run. Run Very Fast.

this is kinda derailing, but what's a Greater Monk's Belt and what book is it from?
Zaistars69

10-18-06, 02:25 PM
Yes, but it's far more scary, for example, facing a CR 25 Wizard (25 caster levels) than a CR 25 Tarrasque Wizard (5 caster levels).

At least I see it that way, because I tend to use casters quite abusively and brutally. No pulled punches.
The big T with wizard levels would have to be wizard 10 for a cr 25.
Schyron

10-18-06, 05:20 PM
Or better yet, make it a vampire or a half-fiend.
That would really kill. On the other hand, could a vampire turn Big T into a vampire spawn.

Do that and it loses it's Regeneration.

A 40th level psion that successfully switches bodies with a tarrasque when the tarrasque just happens to roll a 1 and automatically bothces his save.

A full fledged tarrasque with 40th level psion capabilities is lovely.

Ahh, your all way off.

Awakened Tarrasque, Ur-Preist 10. :schemes:

Or if you really wanted to hurt people. Awakened Tarrasque, Cleric 10 / Bone Knight 10. Then post over in the OP boards and ask for arcane fusion tricks. (+10 CR?):nonono:

A military horde undead marches towards you, leading it is a demonic humanoid, his wings unfurls and he holds a massive sword over his head as he calls for his army to halt.

Combat

Death Strike (Su)
Once per day, Nerahoep may use a bonecraft weapon to stike down a living foe. He must decide to use this ability before the attack roll is made.
If the attack succeeds, the target must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 23 ) or die. this is a necromantic death effect.

Dodge Melee (Su)
Whenever a melee attack hits, Nerahoep is allowed a DC 15 reflex save to ignore the damage.

Necromantic Might, Necromantic Presence, Master of the White Banner (Su)
Undead within 60ft. of him gain +2 to all attack and damage rolls. They also gain +7 turn resistance.

Retributionary Damage (Su)
All damage delt to Nerahoep is split in half, one half to Nerahoep and the other half to the source of the damage.

Persistant Spells (Sp)
Divine Power (3rd), Necrotic Empowerment (8th), Visage of the Deity, Greater (9th), Ray Deflection (4th), StormRage (8th).

Summon Skeletal Steed (Sp)
Once per day, as a full-round action, Nerahoep may magically call his skeletal steed mount from the abyssal realms in which it resides. (a heavy warhorse with the skeletal template applied) This ability is the equivalent of a spell of the third level. The mount immediately appears adjacent to Nerahoep and remains for 10 hours; it may be dismissed at any time as a free action. The mount is the same creature each time it is summoned, though Nerahoep may release a particular mount from service. A skeletal steed cannot be turned while its bone knight is rides it.

Stormrage Bolt (Sp)
As a standerd action a bolt of lightning can be shot from Nerahoeps eyes, it requires a ranged touch attack to hit with a +3 bonus to attack if target is wearing metal armor. It deals 10d6 electricity damage and does not provoke a attack of opportunity.

Undead Army (Ex)
Nerahoep commands a host of karrnathi undead. While all can think and act on their own. A few are directly commended by Nerahoep, while the rest stick around just to kill stuff. 2d6+12/2d6+12 karrnathi skeleton/zombie commanders serve under his power, if any others are promated they are watched very closely... And 6d6+12/6d6+12 karrnathi skeletons/zombies serve in his army becuse they want to. Two fully enhanced five-headed paragon bone pyrodras and two fully enhanced five-headed paragon bone cyrodras march within the main unit as well. If the hydras are slain Nerahoep resurrect them so they are always part of the warhost.

***
Why's

Undead choice.
Karrnathi undead are not mindless and can advance by class as a normal player. As such, the free ones can choose to remain jusr as a commener can join a army. The five headed Pryo/Cryo-dra choice what for their low HD and deadly abilites. None of the abilities are lost by becoming a bone creature and tacking on paragon is better than advancing it. In the end, he can control four of these things...

Weapon & Armor.
Bonecraft Magebane Valorous Greatsword +5 deals 2d4+5 normaly, +1d6 to living creatures, +2d6 to creatures that can cast spells or spell-like abilities.
And damage is doubled when charging. A Bonecraft & Mithral anything may not be allowed. But why not? And who cares, no sane DM would allow half the stuff I gave this guy.

Spells.
Tome of Ancient Lore allows Nerahoep to prepare ANY arcane spell and cast it. Southern Magician allowd Nerahoep to cast ten arcane spells per day as a devine spell. So Nerahoep can persist arcane spells like Ray Deflection. The Rod Of Metamagic Extend can be used on Divine Power and Ray Deflection to tack on another two persistant buffs.

Protection.
Stormrage and Ray Deflection come together and block ranged attacks.
Starmantel Cloak & Ring Of Evasion also come together to allow a DC 15 reflex save to dode all melee damage delt to Nerahoep. Having +11 to reflex saves means he only takes damage if he rolls a 4 or lower (20% chance your attack hurts him) Throw in Retributive Amulet, resistances, and his DR to finish off his melee protection and help out against spells like fireball.
Spell turning helps out too. And keeps reaving dispel from robbing your near god-like powers.

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/basics.htm
While not truly an artifact, the epic magic item is a creation of such power that it surpasses other magic items. Epic magic items are objects of great power and value. The following are typical characteristics of an epic magic item. In general, an item with even one of these characteristics is an epic magic item.

Grants a bonus on attacks or damage greater than +5.
Grants an enhancement bonus to armor higher than +5.
Has a special ability with a market price modifier greater than +5.
Grants an armor bonus of greater than +10 (not including magic armor’s enhancement bonus).
Grants a natural armor, deflection, or resistance bonus greater than +5.
Grants an enhancement bonus to an ability score greater than +6.
Grants an enhancement bonus on a skill check greater than +30.
Mimics a spell of an effective level higher than 9th.
Has a caster level above 20th.
Has a market price above 200,000 gp, not including material costs for armor or weapons, material component- or experience point-based costs, or additional value for intelligent items.
An epic magic item that grants a bonus beyond those allowed for normal magic items has a higher market price than indicated by the formulas for non-epic items.
Does the Tarrasque's natural attack have a +6 enchantment on it? Did the Tarrasque spend over 200,000gp to be born with his claws?

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/tarrasque.htm
The tarrasque’s natural weapons are treated as epic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Just making sure you read the word epic... And treated...

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#incorporealSubtype
An incorporeal creature has no physical body. It can be harmed only by other incorporeal creatures, magic weapons or creatures that strike as magic weapons, and spells, spell-like abilities, or supernatural abilities. It is immune to all nonmagical attack forms. Even when hit by spells or magic weapons, it has a 50% chance to ignore any damage from a corporeal source (except for positive energy, negative energy, force effects such as magic missile, or attacks made with ghost touch weapons). Although it is not a magical attack, holy water can affect incorporeal undead, but a hit with holy water has a 50% chance of not affecting an incorporeal creature.
Wheres the word epic?

i would like to point out that runestar is right about the damage reduction thing.. Epic is NOT magic..

Thats like saying DR/Silver can be overcome with Coldiron..

Not happening.. and the rules are very specific about what you need to overcome DR.

Its not ' well this is greater then this therefore it works" thats how 3.0 worked and they re-did it because it was INEFFECTIVE. hence why they changed it.

as for what class...

I really liked the frenzied beserker idea..... <3

and what would a lvl 20 paladin BIG T ride?

Y A SOLAR of course <3

I also had the idea of the psion who uses true mind switch on the Tarrasque.

That is a recipe for ruling the multiverse. A powerful psion with the body of the Tarrasque would be simply INVINCIBLE.

I try to stay out of psionics. Evey day I comment how broken complete devine is, and it's nothing compaired to psionics...
Yes I am saying psionics is broken, it's my choice to say that. Get over it.
However, a spellcaster can still use a violated spell to slowly kill you :p
(like violated harm)

*Mordenkainen's Disjunction*

Two words "Contingency" and "Dispel Magic, Greater", combined with a decent set of tactics they won't get a second chance. Remember, Nerahoep can cast any arcane spell and has more casting slots than a wizard. Plus, access to nearly evey devine spell. Evey spell combo you come up with he can mimic it too.

Including simply firing off a Antimagic Ray or Ray Of Stupidity :evillaugh

Sorry to dissappoint a fellow supporter, but apparently, it is. I emailed cust service and they told me that ability to overcome dr/epic automatically includes the ability to overcome dr/magic...:embarrass

Not really, it just means that it is set up to take tons of falling damage when the wiz does dispel its fly...;)

Still, there are possibilities. A size "Colossal+" creature (like an ancient Prismatic dragon (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/monsters/dragonEpic.htm#prismaticDragon)) might work.
