Axebeak Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

The Axebeak (Arms and Equipment Guide) is awesome, but thus far I have had difficulty locating a version of it that was updated to 3.5. Does anyone know where such an update is located or, alternatively, is there anyone good at this sort of thing that would be willing to help? I don't know the first thing about a 3.0 - 3.5 conversion when it comes to monsters. Many thanks in advance for any and all help!

02-17-07, 01:04 AM Since it's an animal (who's abilities were slighlty changed from 3.0-3.5) and dosen't appear to have any skills, feats, or qualities that underwent changes between editions I would say the Axebeak is pretty much functional as it is right now. Just a few notes, though:

1. The Combat lines for it, when updated, should look like this:

BAB/Grapple: +2 / +8
Attack: Beak +3 Melee (1d8+2)
Full Attack: Beak +3 Melee (1d8+2) and 2 Kicks -2 melee (1d4+1)
Space/Reach: 5ft / 10ft

Though that's more a cosmetic thing than anything else.

2. The way animals gain feats and skills were changed to be uniform with all other creatures. That means the listed axebeak has no feats and has many, many more skill points than it should.

2.A. The axebeak should have two feats (Base feat plus one for its 3rd HD). I would recomend Run(which would replace and account for it's ability to move at 5x it's speed with a run action) and something that would fit for a wild animal, probably endurance or similar.

2.B. The axebeak should have a total of 6 skill points. [(2 + -4) minimum 1 x 6, since it gets quadruple skill points for first HD]. To match the skills it was assigned in A&EG I would put 2 skill points each into spot, listen, and Jump. And then give it a +2 racial bonus to Jump checks and a +4 racial bonus to Listen, and Spot checks(which improves in bright light to +12 for spot).

3. The Handle Animal DC to Rear it should be DC 18 (15+HD) and it can be taught tricks or special purposes like any other animal with 2 intelligence.

Basically, that seems to cover it....
