I've made this encounter for 2nd level characters where they stumble into a neogi slave trading ring. Anyways, this will be the "boss fight" for this dungeon, so I want to make it challenging, but not overly lethal. In any case, they will stumble across one neogi with one or two sorcerer class levels and a baby umber hulk.

As I don't have a Monster's Manual on me at the moment, can anyone possibly give me a writeup of a baby umber hulk suitable to challenge a party of five 2nd level adventurers?

Thanks!

You'd have to do the exact opposite of advancing (adding hit dice, so you'd take them away, there's a whole chapter in the MM about this). And decrease all it's stats and stuff, it doesn't seem that hard, but I'm too lazy to do it. Good luck.

The umber (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umber_hulk) hulk (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/3E_Monster_0300.asp) is considered a "Product Indentity" by Wizards of the Coast and as such is released under its Open Gaming License.

So if you don't own a Monster Manual, I am not too sure how we could help you without getting ourselves into legal problems here.

If you, however, have the stats of an umber hulk, you can do exactly what fiendish_platypus suggests by using the guidelines you can find here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/improvingMonsters.htm).

If you've got your hands on one, I'd use a low-level Umber Hulk Monster Class from Savage Species. That might be my favorite book with Libris Mortis. :evillaugh

They even have a racial progression for an Umber Hulk... I try to avoid that book though, it's so wierd, I usually only use the PrC and the templates.

Ah well, I didn't know there was legal ramifications for statting an underpowered umber hulk. By the way, would you still allow it to have its confusion ability?

If you are heading for a CR 2 monster I think you should do the following:
Decrease its size by one step, adjust its natural weapon's damage, abilities, AC, natural armor, abilities, etc. accordingly, halve its HDs (adjust number of feats and skill points as appropriate), and natural armor (as adjusted from size decrease), give it a negative ability adjustment to a mental ability (e.g. Int), adjust spell based special attacks to resemble spells of appropriate spell level for its caster level/HD, and give it weaker versions of special qualities that are not based on its type.

Like daze instead of confusion (as the spell)
