Hi all
I have an odd question and I was hoping someone might have the lore on hand.

Which of the Celestial creatures is the best balance for a balor?

Specifically, I'd be looking for something that could be Chaotic Good (story purposes) and around DC 20, like the Balor.

Any suggestions?

I assume you mean CR 20...

Ghaele eladrin is CG and pretty darn powerful (forget the exact CR...a few fighter levels could make up the difference)

Ditto the planetar...change the algnment. Solar is too powerful at CR 23.

Ditto the leonal.

Throw the half-celestial template on a great dragon.

Book of Exalted Deeds has tons of celestials...unfortunately, I don't have it at the moment.

You are probably talking about the Tulani Eladrin CR 18, ELC 28. Has some nice abilities(even the bardic music abilities of a 18th level bard). There is also the Shiradi, CR 14, ELC 24. You could advance it up to the CR you need.

Edit: There is also the Asura, a Chaotic good angel, CR 8. Advance it up to 18HD(another +5 CR) then add levels in Ranger..with the appropriate favored enemies. For CR 20 you could add up to 14 levels of Ranger.

You know whats a significant challange to a Balor? A Lantern Archon with 10 levels of monk. Don't ask, just do, and you will see the wisdom of my madness.

Or the madness of your wisdom, eh?

I just have to laugh at the idea of a creature that's essentially a ball of light using the skills of Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.

Actually, its mostly about getting those good saves for a bit.. I forgot to tell you what to do afterward... get 2 levels of PALADIN!! AND YOU WILL BE THE ALMIGHTY MASTER OF SAVING THROWS!!!

MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :evillaugh

Except that the lantern archon doesn't have a CHA bonus at 10. :weep: My plan is ruined.

Oh well, use the same level gain plan on a Hound Archon.. AND BOOM!!! SO GOOD ALIGNED ITS GOT TO BE EVIL!! MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :evillaugh

I've got the evil overlord of saving throws, if you want. Sure, Divine Grace once is nice.

Try Fighter 5/Corrupter 1/Blackguard 10/Corrupter 4 (Corrupter is a NE Paladin variant in Dragon 312).

I made one (gestalted with Dread Necromancer as a BBEG).
18 Str (+6 belt of Giant Strength)= 24 Str
Dex 14
Con --
Int 15 (+2 from Lich included)
Wis 16 (+2 from lich included)
18 Cha to start
+5 from levels
+2 Lich
+5 Tome
+6 Cloak
--------
36 Cha.

Charisma to saves twice (Divine Grace and Dark Blessing).
Base Saves:
Fort +12
Ref +8
Will +12

Final saves:
Fort +38
Ref +36
Will +41

Take away the gestalt, and just follow the martial side, keeping the stats the same (they were rolled)

Fort +38
Ref +36
Will +34

At 20th level. It's nothing the Char Op board couldn't come up with in 3 seconds, but it's nice. And the Gestalt (for use as a BBEG) makes him horrifying to fight. Superb in melee, full spellcasting.
