Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out what a Balor trapped away from home would do. I was running Vlindarian's Vault from Dungeon. They players killed Vlindarian but decided not to attack the Balor that he had trapped there.

After reading through the stats on the Balor it doesnt look like he has a way to get back to his home plane. Would he summon something from his home plane to get help? Or would he try to set up shop on the Plane of Fire where he's stuck or even head out to the alternate prime plane that connects to the vault?

On a side note, does anyone know of a good resource for find monsters that might be native to the plane of fire that the Balor might recruit if he were to stay there?

thanks

Balors are among the most powerful demons in the Abyss. One free to act on the Prime Material isn't necessarily going to be in a hurry to return. On the contrary, it's going to relish the opportunity to wreak as much havoc as possible.

Keep in mind, however, that this does not necessarily mean this balor is going to go on a Godzilla-esque rampage and start destroying the nearest town. Sure, balors love combat, but they're not stupid by any means! Quite the contrary, with an average INT and WIS of 24 this critter is going to set itself up with some form of organization and work its havoc through followers and intermediaries.

For whatever reason, your players were foolish enough to allow a demon to go free. If that's not a plot hook for their next BBEG then I've never seen a plot hook! :evillaugh

Agreed. Nothing quite like the PCs hearing rumors of demon worship, horrible rituals, and the like only to find out that they could have stopped it. Or, as an even better plot twist, make the balor a shadowy benefactor of the party, subtly leading them to making his cult for him.

"Who sent us the +1 flaming silver longsword?"

'Our new boss, why?'

"Cuz it's gonna come in handy against the ice devil leading the cult of Levistus he sent us after..."

So much wonderful evil RP can come of this...

Now, as for the fire creatures, there's really no "fire book" I can direct you to. However, I do have a few suggestions...

From the Monster Manual:
Salamanders, Mehpits (Fire, Steam, Magma), evil Azers, Fire Giants, Magmins, Hell Hounds, a young-young adult Red Dragon

I'd stay away from the efreeti, who can simply wish the balor back to the Abyss. Sadly, I don't have my books in front of me, so I can't pull anything outta my head right now. But if you can, check all the Monster Manuals, Fiend Folio, Fiendish Codex: 1, and Sandstorm if you can. All types of possible blaor allies in those books...

Try Denizens of the Inner Planes (http://www.planewalker.com/codex/files/DIPv1.0.zip) from Planewalker

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think i have a good idea of what to do now. The Balor will just open up the Vault for himself and find some minions from the Plane of Fire to work for him.

With his Int he should be able to figure out the passwords for the teleportation circle and who wouldn't want access to a vault where the folks of Sigil store their things! Free treasure for him.

My players are all around 16th level so I'll need to advance some of the recommended monsters so i can challenge them! Thanks again for the monster tips, i should be able to provide a good challenge to my players this weekend!
