Have a little problem figuring out why the Balor's attack is as it is.

A Balor has Str 35 (+12), Weapon Focus (Longsword), Two-Weapon Fighting, and carries a large +1 vorpal longsword and a +1 flaming whip. Its first attacks when two-weapon fighting is then +31 w/ longsword (BAB 20, str +12, +1 Weapon Focus, +1 longsword, -1 size, -2 two-weapon) and +30 w/ whip (as above, but without weapon focus).

Ok, that's right, but i cannot see why it deals only 2d6+8 w/ longsword and 1d4+4+1d6 w/ whip. As i see it, it should deal 2d6+13 (2d6 large longsword, str +12, +1 longsword) and 1d4+7+1d6 w/ whip.

Could anyone please explain this to me? I'm quite confused :weep:

Hrm, in the 3.0 MM, a Balor has 25 Str instead of 35. This dropped his melee attack bonus from what you posted, but the damage was correct at 2d6+8 for the +1 longsword.

I wonder if, when the updated the books to 3.5 they forgot to change the damage on the longsword? Certainly possible...

Yes, it is a mistake, and, yes, dhaga, that is exactly what appears to have happened. While I am glad for the much needed demon and devil power boost, it is a little irksome that they forgot to double check the math for their own improvements. Even more so, since this obvious error did not make it into the errata, at least not yet.

Thank you both. So, then, it should deal more damage than what appears in the book, good. I became to be worried when i checked the errata and it wasn't corrected, and in DM Genie the damage was that of the book, achieved with some obscure penalties to the weapons.

So, then, it should deal what i thought it should do, great.
