If you play 3.5 you should just look at the creature's stats. If you want to get the stats by yourself you simply have to: 1) Check what type of creature you are analizing 2) Check what BAB that type has (for example, Animals have the same BAB of a Cleric, then a 7hd animal would have the same BAB of a 7th level Human Cleric) 3) Add the BAB given by any class levels the creature could have When you have the creature's BAB you can obtain the Grapple modifier: simply 3) Add the creature's Str modifier 4) Add the creature's Size modifier 5) Go and kill your pcs with your grappling creature |
| Ogre4Hire02-11-05, 12:42 PM | Note that the size modifier for grappling is different than the size modifer for AC and Attack rolls. A creature gains a +4 bonus to grapple checks for every size larger than medium it is (+4 for Large, +8 for Huge, ect). However, a creature gains a -4 penalty to grapple checks for every size smaller than medium it is (-4 for Small, -8 for Tiny, ect). This is why, for example, a Purple Worm has a grapple bonus that is so drastically higher than its BAB, while a Grig has an incredably low Grapple. |

This stat has always baffled me, and even the 3.5 Monster Manual cannot aid me in deciphering it. So, does anyone out there know? Can anyone explain it to me? each creature type in the glossary in the 3.5 MM lists whether they have a good Base attack progression (as Fighter or equal to HD) or a medium progression (as Cleric or 3/4HD) or a poor progression (as Wizard or 1/2HD). so to determine a creatures BAB look at its type and HD and figure it out. To determine a creatures grapple bonus take the Base Attack bonus and add the appropriate modifiers for strength/size/racial bonuses (If any) and you are done. as an example of what I am talking about (This is from the SRD, but it appears also on page 305 of the 3.5 monster manual) Aberration Type: An aberration has a bizarre anatomy, strange abilities, an alien mindset, or any combination of the three. Features: An aberration has the following features. —d8 Hit Dice. —Base attack bonus equal to 3/4 total Hit Dice (as cleric). —Good Will saves. —Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die. Traits: An aberration possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). —Darkvision out to 60 feet. —Proficient with its natural weapons. If generally humanoid in form, proficient with all simple weapons and any weapon it is described as using. —Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Aberrations not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Aberrations are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor. —Aberrations eat, sleep, and breathe. |
