Still workin on my Dire Rats....

I now need to know how to figure the calculation for 3E to come up with the amount of BASE SAVE a creature would have...

im not sure i entirely understand...

do they change with size? aside from their Ability Mods?

Look at the back of the monster manual at the animal type in the glossary. It will say what are their good saves. Then you can refer to the classes in the PHB to see the progression of the saves, the high ones being the good saves and the low, the poor.

SRD 3½: (http://geocities.com/sovelior/srd/monsterTypes.html)Animal Type: An animal is a living, nonhuman creature, usually a vertebrate with no magical abilities and no innate capacity for language or culture.
Features: An animal has the following features (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry). d8 Hit Dice. Base attack bonus equal to 3/4 total Hit Dice (as cleric). Good Fortitude and Reflex saves (certain animals have different good saves). Skill points equal to (2 + Int modifier, minimum 1) per Hit Die, with quadruple skill points for the first Hit Die.

Thus advancing a 1 HD dire rat to 6 HD would grant it: 5d8 hp (+5 for con 12) +4 BAB +3 to each base save (it has all three saves good) 5 skill pointsIt would also gain bonuses from increasing in size (small to medium) +4 Str (includes +2 to attack bonus and damage rolls) -2 Dex (includes -1 AC) +2 Con (includes +6 hp, and +1 Fort saves) -1 size to AC and attacks die shift on damage for natural attacks (d4 -> d6)
