| Ogrebear06-07-06, 09:50 AM | Playing around with Savage Species, the DMG, and MM1I get Black Bears as a monster as outlined below. Am I massively off the mark with this? I also wanted to do a 'monster class'; crunching the numbers I got a 3 level class- I thought this was a little odd so asked the other GM's in my area and they seemed to agree so we knocked together an attempt at a Bearfolk which I present below for comments. I wil write fluff for them later. Bearfolk Based on medium sized Black bear in 3rd Ed MM1 Size: Med HD: 2D8 Initiative: As Dex Speed: 30’ AC: +2 natural armour Attacks: 2 claws +6 melee Secondary bite +1 melee Damage: Claw 1d4+4 Bite 1d6 +2 Face/Reach:5ft by 5ft/5ft Spec Attacks: Spec Qualities: Darkvision 60’ Scent Saves: +0 Fort +3 ref +3 Will Abilities: +8 Str +2 Dex +4 Con +0 Int +4 Wis +0 Cha Skills: (2 + int mod) x5 Climb +6 Listen =4 Spot +7 Swim +8 ECL: +4 Level Adj: +2 Favour Class: Barbarian Type: Monstrous Humanoid CR: 3 Treasure: Std Align: Any Advance: By Class Bear Folk Monstrous Class Level 1: 1d8 HD/ Fort +0; Ref +2; Will +2/ Claw Attack 1d4+4/Climb +2/ Spot +2/ Darkvision/ Scent/ Listen +2/ Swim +4/ +1 Natural Armour/ Str +2 / +2 Con/ +2 Wis Level 2:Fort +0; Ref +0; Will +0/ Bite attack 1d6+2/ +1 natural armour/ Spot +2/ Climb +2/ +4 Str/ +2 Con/ Level 3: 1d8 HD/ Fort +0; Ref +1; Will +1/ 2nd Claw Attack 1d4+4/ Climb +2/ Listen +2/ Swim +4/ Spot +3/ +2 Str/+2 Dex/ +2 Wis/ |

You can't get to ECL 4 with a three level class.... HD: 2D8 Initiative: As Dex Speed: 30’ AC: +2 natural armour Attacks: 2 claws +6 melee OK, here's your first problem: inconsistency. You can't say "Initiative: As Dex", and then list an attack bonus for the natural attacks based on an assumed strength score. There's another issue here: you don't list the creautre's type. Is it an Animal, or a Monstrous Humanoid, or a Humanoid? That matters quite a bit when you have racial HD that generate BAB & saves. Lastly, if you have Savage Species, you know there already is an Anthropomorphic Black Bear in that book. Why not just use that? |

I'll reconsider the level breakdown then. OK, here's your first problem: inconsistency. You can't say "Initiative: As Dex", and then list an attack bonus for the natural attacks based on an assumed strength score. Ok, what should I have listed please? There's another issue here: you don't list the creautre's type. Is it an Animal, or a Monstrous Humanoid, or a Humanoid? That matters quite a bit when you have racial HD that generate BAB & saves. Type is listed at the bottom of the Bearfolk main entry and its Monstrous Humaniod. Lastly, if you have Savage Species, you know there already is an Anthropomorphic Black Bear in that book. Why not just use that? I *did* use that table, plus the Anthro rules presented, plus the guides in the MM and DMG- I have simply writtern out the whole entry for an Anthro Black Bear and then tried to break it down into levels since I want to be able to play (or allow my players to) a Bearfolk from level 1. |

The saves where based on the entry in the MM and the Savage Speices Anthro tables. Wizards made them choices! |
