Here is the official home of the Beholder Adoption Association. Come in, take one of the cute little :behold: 's out of the Monster Manual. Then, you can make it your own. Teach it a class, give it a template, and, most importantly, name it.

This is also the place to discuss beholder lifecycles, tactics, habitats, and anything else related to eye tyrants.

Coming soon, stats on my pet beholder, Skippy.

"Beholder Adoption." Now it makes sense! :)

I'm going to take you up on your adoption offer. Unfortunately, my group is only around 3rd lv. Once they get up to about level 7 or so, I'll give them a sickly one who needs to be put out of its misery.

:fight!: + :mage: + ( :dice: :dice: :dice: ) = :behold: :weep:

======================================== ======
Despite a negative first impression from your original sig, you might be OK after all because, in my book, anyone proposing game content of any kind can't be all bad :).

I will place his stats when I get home, But The Great Venom Eye (1/2 fiend beholder) later to become The Soul of Venom Eye (Ghost 1/2 fiend beholder) later The True Form of The Soul of Venom Eye (Evolved 2 twice, 4 swarm forms, half red dragon, I didn't actually use these for history, more for freaky abilities.) was a big hit, weeeel, he did kill each member of the party an adverige of 4 times, so I liked him. His favourate food is Half-Orc Barbarians, Elven Wizards, Gnome Bards, Halfling rouges and Dwarven fioghters, (some of which he lures into the etherial realm every now and again, now he is a ghost) and is favourate colour is green. Also answers to the name fluffy.

Here are three variant Beholders that I came up with for a short Beholder article I posted a while back.

Necroholder: This Beholder was born in a place of powerful negative magic. A graveyard with many dead wizards or sorcerers, the resting site of a powerful dragon, or the presence of a strong undead. This Beholder has the following changes: Knowledge (religion) +17, Flyby attack is replaced with Spell Focus (Necromancy), and his eye rays have changed.
Charm Monster - Enervation
Charm Person - Ray of Enfeeblement
Disintegrate - Eye Bite
Fear - Does not change
Finger of Death - Does not change
Flesh to Stone - Wave of Fatigue
Inflict Moderate Wounds - Does not change
Sleep - Chill Touch
Slow - Contagion
Telekinesis - Blight

Now many of the spell-like abilities have no saves, so increase the Beholder’s challenge rating by one.

Ignanholder: A Beholder that was born of fire, either in a volcano or place of fire. Some how the Beholder has become imbued with the power of fire. This Beholder has the following changes: fire immunity, cold vulnerability, Flyby attack is replaced with Spell Focus (Evocation), and his eye rays have changed.
Charm Monster - Wall of Fire
Charm Person - Burning Hands
Disintegrate - Chain Lightning (Fire substituted)
Fear - Fire Shield (fire version only)
Finger of Death - Delayed Blast Fireball
Flesh to Stone - Lightning bolt (Fire substituted)
Inflict Moderate Wounds - Flaming Sphere
Sleep - Does not change, the burning slumber
Slow - Fireball
Telekinesis - Cone of Cold (Fire substituted)

Challenge rating unchanged.

Forceholder: A Beholder that was born in a forcecage or similar spell. It has been infused with the power of force and can project its abilities upon its foes. The following changes are made: +4 shield bonus, this acts as though shield spell has been cast and cannot be dispelled and his eye rays have changed.
Charm Monster - Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere
Charm Person - Magic Missile
Disintegrate - Bigby’s Forceful Hand
Fear - Otiluke’s Resilient Sphere
Finger of Death - Mordenkainen’s Sword
Flesh to Stone - Flesh to Force, instead of stone the creature’s flesh turns to a visible force. Stone to flesh will still cure the condition
Inflict Moderate Wounds - Burning Hands (force damage)
Sleep - Constant Shield
Slow - Scorching Ray (force damage, only 1 ray)
Telekinesis - Wall of Force

This Beholder has an increased armor class and is immune to magic missiles, has many no save spells, and many force damage spells. His challenge rating should be increased by one.

This reminds me of an old character of mine. A NG Female (they had genders in that world!) Beholder Bard. She was only medium-sized, had red skin, her eyestalks were longer and trailing behind her body like long girly hair, and her central eye was blue, bright and expressive.

She played a harp and had a lovely singing voice... :D

meet Mekrai'Thojin, :behold:, a pseudonatural beholder that's a rogue 12/wizard 25. he (actually an it, but i say "he" for the sake of convinience) has dark gray scales with patterns of eyes on them (actually tattoos, fun having the effects of various magical items as tattoos.). his eye tendrils are slightly shorter than average beholder length, and he's got about two dozen vestigial tendrils extending from various areas of (what, his head?). when he transforms into his alternate form, he's a living net made of tendrils and eye stalks that appears to be tie-dyed purple and orange with lines of black. Mekrai'Thojin is getting old, and has to use dentures (made from adamntine, he's got the cash) wich are enchanted to meld into his alternate form as adamantine spike on the end of his tentacles. his familiar is an eyeball (beholderkin) named locutus, and has been twisted by magic to have the breath weapon of a great wyrm black dragon and the psionic abilities of a mind flayer.

i'm going to add Mekrai'Thojin to an eberron campaign. he gives the dealkyr orders (or he eats them, with mustard, he's allergic to ketuch, alchemical accident about 1,200 years ago)

I personally like my Half-Illithid Beholder, The All-Knowing Orb (illithid savant 10/beholder mage 10). Sure, it probably doesn't work, but the thought of a knowledge-consuming spellcaster who can launch three spells at one target just makes me grin. :D

Thats very cool. What does it look like. Im imagining a huge floating Illithid head with a single opalescent eye.

It's a particularly large Beholder (around 17-20 HD, if memory serves) with no central eye and a lot of things hanging from it. It actually looks like a normal mindwitness (minus the eye), which is why I love it.

"Look at the cute mindwitness!"

heh

i have always wanted to throw a vampire beholder into a game...just thinking of it with its eyestalks slicked back, a high collared cape and seducing the ladies with its "enchanting" gaze as it moves closer for a neck~bite cracks me up.

throw in a level or two of ninja and make sure each eyestalk has its own lil ninja hood and the good times REALLY begin.

Meet Xanx (that is just one of his names...like a Gnome, he collects them).
Xanx is a Beholder of greater than normal mental facilities (i.e. he thought of either 'damping' or putting a magical contact-lense on his central eye if wanting to become a Beholder Mage. However, other Beholders thought that that took the sacrifice out of qualifying for the PrC, and you'd get 'un-commited' members who'd join just for the thrill of it, and so forbade his joining.). He appreciates fine art and music...and is also a bit of a Metal lover. His sole weakness from his perspective, is his lack of hands.

Ye-Badi, Eye of Irresh
Ye-Badi is my really unorthodox dragon worshipping beholder with a Dragon Turtle bloodline, With 6 levels of prophet and 18 levels of Dragon Priest of Irresh he is a powerfull spellcaster with acces to very good divination spells.
Ye-Badi is covered in green scales and has a thick turtle like shell protecting the top, back and bottom of his body, he's got a huge central eye of glowing azure blue light and a few stalkless green iris eyes on varius places on his front side (he doesn't have allround vision) but he permanently is effected by true-seeing as a sorceror level 30, he also has energy sense wich allows him to know the location of all magical effects within 30 feet of him and all living creatures within a mile of him.
He hoards knowledge like dragons hoard treasure but he's quite willing to share what he knows at a price.
Finaly he's a rather withdrawn beholder living a hermit-style life and is only willing to talk to people who are Draconic (or partialy Draconic), eye-candy (very pretty girls) or people willing to give him plenty of payment for his info.

beholder with a Dragon Turtle bloodline, But Beholders don't have blood and they breed by just spiting out their children so how has it got that?
Mr.Dragon

09-04-05, 02:23 PM
You don't need to have sex to have traits from a creature... yes blood was a poor word choice but anyway there are thousands of ways it could have gotten em.

Ugh, threadomancy! Only thing worse than a beholder is an undead one...

We need no more steenkin' beholders. There are at least 4-5 varities of pure beholder and like a dozen and a half beholderkin easy.
