CR: 1/2
Alignment: Often Chaotic Good
Treasure: Double art, 50% coins, standard gems, triple pottery, no goods
Advancement: ¼ baby (diminutive) ½ adult (tiny) 1 (small)

Increased vision(natural ability): A nanobeholders three eye stalks grant it a +1 racial bonus on spot and search checks. Whenever attacked from behind it has a 25% chance of not being flanked.

Buoyancy (ex): A nanobeholder has an air filled-sac that makes it naturally fly at 20ft (average) as if under the spell Fly and also acts as a permanent feather fall.

Eye beams (su): A nanobeholder has several eye beam attacks
Left eyestalk: As ray of frost
Middle eyestalk: As left eyestalk except dealing1d3 electric damage
Right eyestalk: As left eyestalk except 1d3 fire damage
Central Eye: Ray of Charm Person
All eyestalks can use a ray of mage hand.

 Cuteness (su): A nanobeholder is supernaturally cute. Any hostile, unfriendly, or indifferent creature that is within 30ft of the nanobeholder must make a will save (dc: 15) upon entering seeing the beholder or become one level friendlier towards it. They suffer a –2 circumstantial penalty to the save if the nanobeholder is crying. This does not affect other nanobeholders, beholders, or beholder-kin. A creature that succeeds at its save is immune to the cuteness for one day.

Intense Cuteness (su): As cuteness, only the save dc is 18.

Nanobeholders are a much smaller, weaker, and cuter variety of beholders. They look like a very tiny beholder with three eyestalks, and one proportionally enormous central eye. They generally act friendly and are non aggressive, however there are many exceptions.

Most evil nanobeholders are lawful evil, acting through manipulation and avoiding harm through their cute and innocent appearance. Often an evil nanobeholder seeking to harm a party will hire a cohort to stage a fake attack on it so that it can be “rescued” and endear itself to the party.

The one thing nanobeholders fear above all else, regardless of alignment, is normal beholders. Normal beholders are immune to the nanobeholder’s cuteness effect and view it as a very weak abomination deserving to be disintegrated without a second thought. When a nanobeholder encounters a normal beholder it will charm the nearest person into protecting it and then fly away crying like a frightened little girl.

Nanobeholder society: Nanobeholders live in little underground ant hole-like colonies. These caverns are branching series of tunnels with many sharp vertical drops leading to various large chambers. The tunnels are almost impossible for a character any larger than small to fit through. The chambers are usually based on their different purposes, a chamber for storing food in, various waste chambers, a sleeping chamber for each nanobeholder, a nursery chamber where babies and eggs are kept, Etcetera. They carve these tunnels out by freezing sections of ground with their ice rays, cracking them with their heat rays, and moving the chunks of frozen dirt out of the way with their telekinesis. They target dirt with telekinesis only for the finer details.

Nanobeholders generally appreciate fine art and are greatly skilled at making pottery. They usually will shape clay perfectly with their mage hand beams and then use their heat rays to fire it.

Nanobeholders retain a self valuing essence of their greater kin and hate the idea of being a famliliar or pet. If asked to be a familiar they will be extremely offended, good aligned ones will curse in anger and leave steaming, neutral ones will yell and then fire a warning eye beam, evil ones will often lose control and attack. If a diplomacy check is attempted to convince one to be a familiar, companion, etcetera, then the dc is 10 higher than it would normally be.

Baby nanobeholders look like the adults except that:
1. They are about the size of a fist.
2. They have no eyestalks yet.

CR: 1
Alignment: Any
Treasure: Standard art, 60% coins, standard gems (black onyx gems and obsidian only), triple bone objects, 10% goods
Advancement: ¼ baby (diminutive) ½ child (tiny) 1 adult (small)

Moritobeholders resemble larger nanobeholders with skin ranging from dark blue or purple to black, with a few (1 out of every 7) albinos thrown in for good measure. They also have slightly smaller central eyes and appear less cuddly than their kin.

Moritobeholders, also called necrobeholders or darkeyes, are a variety of nanobeholders with necromantic powers. Unlike normal nanobeholders they lack a noteworthy tendancy towards any particular alignment. Moritobeholders are more skilled with bone carvings than pottery, and make fine bone statuettes and weapons. A moritobeholder requires 2 less gp in raw materials to make a masterwork weapon out of bone. Moritobeholders frequently team up with regular nanobeholders, occasionally sharing colonies with them.

Eye beams (su): A Moritobeholder has several eye beam attacks, each requires a ranged touch attack to hit (except the central eye).
Left eyestalk: Inflict Minor wounds
Middle eyestalk: Disrupt Undead
Right eyestalk: Cure Minor Wounds.
Central Eye: Cone of Hypnotize 15 feet wide and 10ft long
All eyestalks can use a ray of mage hand.

Increased vision(natural ability): A necrobeholder's three eye stalks grant it a +1 racial bonus on spot and search checks. Whenever attacked from behind it has a 25% chance of not being flanked.

Buoyancy (ex): A moritobeholder has an air filled-sac that makes it naturally fly at 20ft (average) as if under the spell Fly and also acts as a permanent feather fall.

Cuteness(su): As nanobeholder, except the save dc is 13.

Revivification(su): When killed, a moritobeholder has a 25% chance of rising as a ghost nanobeholder (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=131247) 1 hour afterwards.

Spiritobeholders look like a transparent slightly bluish-white nanobeholder with dark eyes that have glowing green pupils. Their mouths drip with a glowing blue ectoplasm that lasts strong for 2 rounds on surfaces before fading into a pale colorless patch. While it lasts it increases the climb and balance dc on any steep surfaces by 1. A spiritobeholder's cold glow sheds shadowy illumination for 5ft.

Spiritobeholders are usually moritobeholders risen by innate magic. Some are the restless souls of advanced nanobeholders.

Combat: Spiritobeholders will focus on one creature given the oppertunity, lapping away at their life force while weakening them with the other eye beams. If faced with multiple opponents they will attack different angles with their rays usually rotating targets and using cause fear on any creatures that get to close followed by a lick attack of oppertunity when the foe flees.

Strength Damage(su): A living creature hit by a spiritobeholder's lick attack must make a fortitude save dc:12 or take 1 strength damage. A spiritobeholder heals 1hp if the creature made its save or 3hp if the creature failed its save, gaining any excess as temporary hit points, although it does not reach more than twice its total hp this way. Temporary hit points thusly gained fade away after 1 hour.

Eye beams (su): A Spiritobeholder has several eye beam attacks, each requires a ranged touch attack to hit (except the central eye).
Left eyestalk: Ray of frost
Middle eyestalk: Inflict minor wounds
Right eyestalk: Ray of fatigue (fatigues target for 1 round)
Central Eye: Cone of cause fear15 feet wide and 10ft long. Creatures within must make a will save dc:13 or become frightened for 1d4 rounds.
All eyestalks can use a ray of mage hand.

Increased vision(natural ability): A spiritobeholder's three eye stalks grant it a +1 racial bonus on spot and search checks. Whenever attacked from behind it has a 25% chance of not being flanked.

Buoyancy (ex): A spiritobeholder has an air filled-sac that makes it naturally fly at 20ft (average) as if under the spell Fly and also acts as a permanent feather fall.

Cuteness(su): As nanobeholder, except the save dc is 12.

Rejuvination(su): Spiritobeholders are difficult to destroy. A "destroyed" spiritobeholder reforms in 2d6+1 days if it makes a successful charisma check dc:9.

Subcorporeal(ex): A spiritobeholder is treated as incorporeal witht the following exceptions: It still takes normal damage from all kinds of energy other than acid, it retains its strength score and movement speeds, it cannot penetrate material of 12 or more hardness, and ivory and carved bone objects are treated as ghost touch towards it.

Probably Not. They are sentient beings more intelligent and wise than most humans and would probably be unwilling to become a subservient extension of some spellcaster's consience. They'd no more agree to be a familiar than a gnome or a halfling.
Joe Gold

Well, more of an improved familiar then. Mepthits, Imps, Quasits, and Psuedodragons have similar stats. Or you could just say "no, they can't."

But how will teenage girls get their hands on them, then :P .
Supernatural cuteness, you know some noble's daughter would want one.

Hmm, that could be an interesting plot idea, convincing a nanobeholder to live with a family.

Just when you thought you had seen it all

...Bleeding from wounds inflicted by horrible fiends from the Nine Hells, our adventurers plodded steadily onward, weighed down from the spoils of the ancient crypt. Without warning, Lidda called for a sudden halt.
"I hear something," he wispered "prepare yourselves."
Quickly and with practiced ease, the hardy warriors put down their load. Axe and shield in hand Tordek crept towards the door, making sure you avoid crunching on the assorted skeletons scattered around the tomb. Igor silently brought an arrow to his bow while Milae ran through magical incantations. Lidda had already disapered into the shadows. Slowly Tordek slid the portal open, expecting the worst.
What the group saw was the most alien sight in the crypt filled with undead, demons and other evil beasts. A small head floating in the centre of a large room.
"It's so cute," cried Lidda as she flew into the room to embrace it.
Silently it turned and the three remaining friends screamed a warning as jets of acid and pure cold hurtled towards her...

Fixed the recursion thing.
Neat story. Nanobeholders don't deal acid damage though.

As for the "Lidda killed the thing" bit,

Lidda tried to kill the thing for ruffling her clothes, not knowing that it had 13 sorcerer levels and 2 prestige classes.

After the battle, lidda encountered a similar but darker and meaner looking creature. It began a speech: [font=Century]"You weary adventurer's are close to the end of your difficulties. I have discovered a secret path you can take that will save you several dangerous battles. It is imperative that you-"[/century] "You're not cute!" lidda shreiked, and she thrust a dagger through the central eye and into the creature's brain. A short while after they had begun looting the body a glowing white duplicate rose from the lifeless form and unleashed a beam of dark energy on her.

Why do I seem to find the evil Nanobeholders 1,000 times cuter? Just picture it. You fight your way to the center of the evil underground labyrinth. You defeat the monstrous creatures guarding the ancient jewel that is allowing fiendish creatures to enter the material plane. The barbarian grabs the jewel and smashes it. A Nanobeholder emerges from behind a statue. It calls the barbarian a "big meanie" and floats away crying  :weep:
