Archangel 01-13-04, 07:24 PM	Can somebody please explain to me how this class works? What is the caster level of the Beholder Mage? What is his new CR (is it worth its new CR)?
sandskimmer 01-13-04, 08:41 PM	By 2ed rules, the caster level depended upon how many of its eyestalks it decided to use as spell stalks. Once an eyestalk was made into a spell stalk, it lost its normal ray ability. I have no idea how they function in 3e. I doubt an increase in CR is justified though - unless its caster level is greater than its standard CR.
ieattrollsforbreakfast 01-14-04, 06:00 AM	I think 3e beholder mages are pretty different to 2e ones. The beholder mage is a prestige class in MC:MoF that a beholder can take when it puts out its central eye. It then learns spells pretty much like a wizard, but with a much better spell progression. The CR would got up by 1 for each level of the PrC taken. Tee caster level is probably the PrC class level, so 1-10. Trouble is that seems weak, but I havent got it in front of me now so I could be wrong,
Boondoggle 01-14-04, 06:44 AM	Monsters of Faerun doesn't mention anything about caster levels. In that case, I would suggest having the caster level equal to twice the PrC level. Also, has anyone else noticed the discrepency in that the description of beholders in general lists the beholder's eye stalk caster level as 14, whereas the specific beholder description lists it as 13. I'm pretty sure that 13 is the intended level, which is HD +2, the same as the gauth, and 13 was the caster level in 3E. Hmm, based on that, a beholder mage caster level of HD (racial & class levels) +2 would follow in the vein of their caster level in general. The only problem with that is that by the time the beholder can finally cast 9th level spells, it's a 23rd level caster.
