fun!
if a beholder gets the multiheaded template it can get an additional 3 heads. that means it can create 4 antimagic fields
and 28 (a think a beholder naturally has 7 eyestalks) eye rays. and best of all, imagine what it would look like! pure hilarity.

Hmmm... The multi-headed beholder sounds cool, but it raises a good question. Is the beholder (body and all) just a "head?"

Given that a vorpal sword has no head to cut off, I am going to say that the creature does not have a discernable head and so it can't get the template. Unless, one counts the top of the creatures body as a head, then you get this one beholder "body" with 20, 30, 40 or more eyestalks grouped all over its sphere.

Thanks for a very, very cool idea.

glad you liked the idea but...
of course its a head!
golems arent harmed by vorpal, but multiheaded can be applied to them; therefore, beholders can get it too. i mean, what else would they be? a shoulder? nah, definitely just a big head.
does anybody know of a way to get a creature to advance one size category?
...if we could just get a huge beholder then that means 12 heads...

kinda brings to mind an obscenely large pearl necklace.... 12 beholders all linked together...imagine the decolletage needed to carry that off :D

Imagine if they weren't linked together physically, only by the same force that lets beholders fly so they all occupy the same space.

Nice idea!
I'm imagining this monster to be something like a single huge orb, but with lots of eyes, mouths and many many more eyestalks all dotted about randomly on the orb. Sort of like a gibbering mouther.

The multiheaded template is either in Savage Species, or in an old Monster Mayhem article somewhere on the site.

What is wrong with you people? Are you actually gonna make someone fight this monstrosity in the making? I mean I am all for evil and all...but damn.

12-19-03, 05:02 PM
That's messed up...

Anyone remember the old 8-bit Castlevania 3 game on the Nintendo, where Dracula's second form was this horrid collection of heads that spewed blood drops and turned to skulls when badly wounded?

That's what this thing would be like - cool!

Personally, I think you should just say no. A beholder is evil enough already.

I mean what would be the CR on this thing? And don't give me any hooie about "just look at the cr entry for the multihead template" either.....can you imagine what a multihead beholdermage could do?
Riznar

12-20-03, 03:17 AM
I think the CR would be just like the CR of two of them

See? The Wheezing has a third little ball down there that the two larger heads/bodies are coming out of. Thats what the beholder would be more like with this template, to me anyway.

This is a good idea but you people forgot that Beholders are extremely xenophobic(sp?). If a Beholder had more than one "head" theres more than a good chance that they will hate eachother for being different then the other.

Theres my two cents, just something to think about.

12-23-03, 12:39 AM
I was gonna say something similiar. other beholders would attack a mutant like that.
Kenkai

12-23-03, 01:17 AM
there are so many ways to work around that that its not even funny.

say an evil wizard captured it and horribly mutated it in various experiments.

thats just one way.

Not to seem obstinent but your wrong, the only way the "heads" would not hate eachother is if 1.) All of the heads looked exactly the same which is very very very unlikely or 2.) The creature was being controled by a mind influencing spell to work together, mind you if the creature were to overcome this it would mean a swift death to whatever dominated it.

To tell you the truth this creature would probably attack itself if that makes any sense. The "heads" would disagree on something and a battle would break out (that would be rather funny). Mind you any other Beholder who came into contact with the creature immediately would try to kill it.

You're assuming that more than one head = more than one mind ... that's not necessarily the case. If it had only one mind, it would "see" both of it's heads as "me."

It could be a mutant as others have stated, like orbs physically linked together or grafted/merged into a lumpy mass (yuk!).

Or, it could be similar to the Paratwa characters in the Christoper Hinz novels; two separate bodies with a single consiousness telepathically linked between them -- two separate bodies that coordinate like a normal person's right and left hands.

Could be very cool.
Boondoggle

12-23-03, 03:35 PM
'cept that's not the way ettins work, which is what the template is based off.

The creature might hate its other head so much they fight, but if, for what ever reason, it did get along well enough & realized the potential power it would have, it could easily be the most powerful beholder around, especially if one of them decided to be a beholder mage.

i believe your correct, they are of the same mind. ive seen creatures that have separate minds that get such benefits as 2 full action is a round, but multiheaded doesnt state anything abou that.

gradea: beholders DEFINITELY have a head. what else could it possibly be? theyre just giant, floating heads. if i cut off someones head, it would still be a head. a head does not need a neck and shoulders to go along with it.

mr weasal: glad to be of service!

Actually it's CR would be 27. 13 for the standard beholder and +14 for having 11 head based attacks and gaining 3 extra heads for being large sized. It would evolve to huge because of the 2 HD advancement for each extra head. It would have 48 attacks in one round. 40 tentacle, 4 eye and 4 bite attacks.

I'm too lazy right now to write it up, maybe a bit later

EDIT: Here it is, tell me if I'm wrong!

Multiheaded Beholder 3.0

Does monsters get ability increases like others do?
Doesn't its bite give more damage due to size increase?

As for the heads hating each other, it depends on how and why they have two heads. If they were seperate beholders that got magically fused together, yes, they're going to be rather upset with each other all the time. If they were born/created that way, they would obviously have learned to work together, as they wouldn't have a choice and wouldn't know any other way. Otherwise, you'd never run into one because they'd all kill each other. And when you're two heads with one body, killing the other head usually takes you with it, and beholders are neither stupid nor suicidal.
